Sal Stewart

19-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Stewart is all bat and no glove, but the Reds still scooped him from the prep ranks with the 32nd overall pick in last year's draft and gave him over $2 million. This hasn't been a player-type (prep power-hitting corner bat) that the Reds have had success with in recent years, but the hope is that Stewart is a significantly better pure hitter than recent busts in this mold. He got into eight complex-league games after signing and hit .292 with four doubles, five strikeouts and four walks. While he may play some third base this season, Stewart is a bad athlete who will only slow down in coming seasons, so his most likely home is first base/designated hitter. His ceiling is amplified as a potential middle-of-the-order threat in Great American Ball Park, but Stewart has a thin margin for error as a hitter due to his defensive shortcomings and is at least several years away. The Reds have selected Stewart with the 32nd overall pick in the 2022 first-year player draft.
ANALYSIS
A 6-foot-3, 215-pound prep third baseman from Florida, Stewart should develop plus power down the road. His hit tool is also quite good for his age and size. He is a below-average runner and may outgrow third base, although he does have the arm to stick at the hot corner.
