Sal Stewart

20-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
Cincinnati Reds
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Stewart is one of the best pure hitters who hasn't reached Double-A yet. Known as a bat-first third baseman who may move to first base entering the 2022 draft, Stewart showed enough defensive chops in his full-season debut that he may be able to stick at the hot corner long term. He had more walks than strikeouts at Single-A and an equal share (13.7 percent) of walks and strikeouts as a 19-year-old at High-A. Stewart won't sell out for power - his pull% was below 42 percent at both stops - but at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds and with the potential to call Great American Ball Park home, it's conceivable he gets to 25-plus homer power by his mid-20s. Given how safe his hit tool appears, Stewart could break out as a power hitter at any point, and he already appears on track to hit enough to play every day. Read Past Outlooks

Jumps up to High-A

August 22, 2023
The Reds promoted Stewart from Single-A Daytona to High-A Dayton on Aug. 8.
ANALYSIS
The 19-year-old third baseman earned the bump on to Dayton after showing some decent pop (10 home runs and 19 doubles) and exceptional plate discipline (66 walks against 59 strikeouts) over his 387 plate appearances in the Florida State League. Since joining the High-A club, Stewart is slashing .277/.386/.319 through 12 games.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Stewart is all bat and no glove, but the Reds still scooped him from the prep ranks with the 32nd overall pick in last year's draft and gave him over $2 million. This hasn't been a player-type (prep power-hitting corner bat) that the Reds have had success with in recent years, but the hope is that Stewart is a significantly better pure hitter than recent busts in this mold. He got into eight complex-league games after signing and hit .292 with four doubles, five strikeouts and four walks. While he may play some third base this season, Stewart is a bad athlete who will only slow down in coming seasons, so his most likely home is first base/designated hitter. His ceiling is amplified as a potential middle-of-the-order threat in Great American Ball Park, but Stewart has a thin margin for error as a hitter due to his defensive shortcomings and is at least several years away.
