C.J. Stroud

C.J. Stroud

24-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
Houston Texans
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After finishing QB9 in fantasy during his rookie season, Stroud took a steep step back last year to QB18. Injuries to key players and a turnstile offensive line made life difficult. Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins and Tank Dell played just four games together thanks to injuries, and Stroud was pressured on 38.6 percent of his dropbacks (4th in NFL) and sacked 52 times (2nd). While his accuracy numbers more or less held steady, Stroud struggled with interceptions, unlike his first year when he threw five. He finished with 12 INTs after a particularly bad stretch in the second half when he posted a 9:8 TD:INT in the last eight games. A league-high six of his interceptions came on attempts of 20-plus yards -- after none the previous year. The Texans remade their offensive line this offseason, but it’s arguably worse without LT Laremy Tunsil, who was traded to Washington. The Texans signed mediocre veterans like Cam Robinson, Trent Brown and Laken Tomlinson, before drafting OT Aireontae Ersery in the second round. For the receivers, Diggs is gone and Dell may miss most of the season after major knee surgery in January, so the Texans drafted Jayden Higgins in the second round and Jaylin Noel in the third. Higgins is 6-foot-4, 212 pounds, with 4.47 speed, and Noel has field-stretching 4.38 speed. They also signed Christian Kirk, giving Stroud a number of quality options. A bounce-back season is possible, if he can stay upright. Read Past Outlooks

Overcomes early mistakes to advance
QBHouston Texans
January 12, 2026
Stroud completed 21 of 32 pass attempts for 250 yards, one touchdown and one interception while recording a pair of lost fumbles in Monday's 30-6 wild-card win over the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Stroud struggled with ball security against Pittsburgh after losing possession of two of his four fumbles in the first half of Houston's wild-card matchup. The Ohio State product tacked on an interception in the third quarter and another fumble that he recovered on the fourth quarter, but the Steelers were only able to generate three points off of the signal-caller's three turnovers Monday. Stroud would settle down behind a dominant performance from his defense (including two defensive TDs) and comfortably guide the Texans to victory in the second half. The 23-year-old will have to clean up those mistakes in the divisional round in order to put his team in position to advance past the Patriots on Sunday.

The knock on Stroud entering last year’s draft was his supposedly sub-par processing ability. It took about two games to kill that narrative. The No. 2 overall pick set a rookie record with 191 pass attempts before his first interception -- in Week 6 -- and two weeks later sewed up Rookie of the Years honors when he passed for a rookie-record 470 yards and five touchdowns. Stroud’s 4,108 yards -- in 15 games, mind you -- ranked third all-time for a rookie, his 23:5 TD:INT was the second-best ratio by a rookie since the merger and his 8.2 YPA was the highest mark for any rookie since 1970 with at least 300 attempts. The strong-armed Stroud continually pushed the ball downfield with a 9.0-yard average target depth, second in the NFL, and excelled throwing deep, completing 58.8 percent of his attempts of at least 20 yards (2nd), with eight touchdowns and no interceptions. His overall accuracy (22nd in on-target percentage) should improve in Year 2, and the addition of Stefon Diggs gives the Texans one of the league’s better WR trios with the 30-year-old joining Nico Collins and Tank Dell. TE Dalton Schultz returns to give Stroud a fourth playmaking target, and the trade for RB Joe Mixon ensures the Texans have a competent pass catcher in their backfield. At 6-3, 218, Stroud moves well in the pocket, but using his legs a bit more could be the key to unlocking additional fantasy value (QB9 last year).
The second overall pick in this year’s draft, Stroud heads to Houston as the franchise quarterback. The Texans said he'll have to earn the starting job, but it’s hard to see him not getting the Week 1 assignment with only Davis Mills and Case Keenum standing in his way. Pre-draft testing knocked his processing ability, but Stroud could be a big-time passer given his quick release, arm strength and accuracy. At 6-foot-3, 218, he moves well in the pocket, though he didn't run for a single TD in two full seasons as a starter at Ohio State and isn't likely to add a ton of rushing stats in the NFL. His biggest issue this season might be a lack of playmakers -- something that was never a problem at Ohio State. The likely No. 1 WR is 31-year-old Robert Woods, 6-4 Nico Collins is still searching for his first 500-yard season, third-round rookie Nathaniel Dell weighs 165 and John Metchie hasn’t played since December 2021 after battling an ACL tear and leukemia. The Texans did sign TE Dalton Schultz to replace Jordan Akins, but Schultz is more of a dump-off target than a seam stretcher or big-play threat. Plus, the Texans want to run frequently with Dameon Pierce and Devin Singletary in the backfield. Check back next year.

Stroud acknowledge his poise faltered against Kansas City's aggressive defense in the second half of Sunday's win over the Chiefs, Sam Warren of the Houston Chronicle reports. "I think that's something I can get better at, just being calm in the chaos," Stroud said. "Pressure, guys flying at your feet, hitting you after the whistle or whatever the case may be. I just want to be able to put my team in better positions."

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely down top WR in playoff game
QBHouston Texans
January 15, 2026
Stroud likely won't have top target Nico Collins for the AFC divisional round against the Patriots, as DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports that Collins wasn't spotted at practice Thursday and remains in concussion protocol.
ANALYSIS
Collins has sat out consecutive practices since suffering a concussion in the wild-card round against the Steelers. Even before Collins was hurt in that game, Stroud struggled, as the quarterback finished with one interception and put the ball on the ground five times, resulting in two lost fumbles. Collins must practice Friday to have any chance of clearing concussion protocol for Sunday's game.
