Deuce Vaughn

Deuce Vaughn

23-Year-Old Running BackRB
Dallas Cowboys
2024 Fantasy Outlook
A sixth-round pick out of Kansas State last year, Vaughn was a preseason darling for the Cowboys but then failed to make any kind of impression in the regular season. Darren Sproles remains the best-case scenario for a player with Vaughn's diminutive stature (5-6, 176), though it's not a great comparison given that Sproles was heavier (185-190 pounds), stronger and probably also faster. While probably little more than a gadget option or pass-catching specialist, Vaughn should at least have the chance to compete for playing time in a weak Dallas backfield led by Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle. Vaughn rushed four times for 13 yards and caught one of his two targets for four yards in Monday's 34-10 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn played just 16 of the Cowboys' 83 offensive snaps in the contest, the fewest of any Dallas running back behind both Rico Dowdle (41) and Ezekiel Elliott (26). The 23-year-old Kansas State product has not been involved in the offense much in 2024, recording just 11 rushing attempts for 33 yards and three catches for 18 yards. Buried on the depth chart behind Dowdle and Elliott on an offense that is struggling to run the ball effectively, Vaughn should not be in consideration for fantasy purposes as the Cowboys head into a Week 12 matchup with the Commanders.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Vaughn is almost completely unprecedented as a 5-foot-5 running back, and his most applicable comparison in terms of frame and athleticism (the Patriots' J.J. Taylor) doesn't quite work because the two have different skill sets. More specifically, Vaughn is a much better receiver than Taylor. Vaughn will be a case study on whether a player with a 5-5, 179-pound frame can amount to more than Taylor on the basis of superior pass catching, but it's a narrow path with limited fantasy upside either way. Even the mighty Darren Sproles had to concede rushing workload limitations in the NFL, making his impact primarily through high-volume receiving and special teams. Vaughn doesn't have the returner route, so the 2023 sixth-round pick out of Kansas State needs to make it as a pass-catching back if he's to get snaps.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could lose spot to Cook
RBDallas Cowboys
August 28, 2024
Vaughn's roster spot could be in jeopardy down the line, as Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports that the Cowboys signed Dalvin Cook to their practice squad Wednesday,
ANALYSIS
Vaughn made the Cowboys' 53-man roster Tuesday, along with Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle. Elliott and Dowdle are expected to get the majority of playing time on offense, with Vaughn's contributions limited primarily to special teams. If Dallas eventually brings Cook up to the active roster, Vaughn would be at risk of getting cut, as the Cowboys may not want to carry four running backs on the roster.
