2023 Fantasy Outlook
The 16th overall pick in 2022, Dotson scored four TDs in his first four games before missing the next five with a hamstring injury and doing next to nothing his first three weeks after returning. Everything then clicked down the stretch, with the Penn State product averaging 4.2 catches for 68.8 yards and 0.6 TDs on 7.0 targets the final five weeks. He finished the year at 14.9 YPR and 8.6 YPT, and the way he did it wasn't what you'd expect from a guy who'd run a 4.43 40 at 178 pounds. While his speed was a factor, Dotson also thrived on contested balls, including a bunch of plays where he got open and then had to come back to catch an imperfect pass from Carson Wentz or Taylor Heinicke. The plan this year is for fellow second-year pro Sam Howell to join Dotson in the lineup at quarterback, with Jacoby Brissett the backup plan. Terry McLaurin remains a strong favorite to lead the team in targets, but it could be close after Dotson had a 35-34 advantage the final five weeks last year. There's room for both to stay busy, even with Curtis Samuel as a strong No. 3, considering the Commanders don't have a serious receiving threat at tight end for new OC Eric Bieniemy. Concludes disappointing 2023
WRWashington Commanders
January 9, 2024
Dotson finished 2023 with 49 catches for 518 yards and four touchdowns on 83 targets.
ANALYSIS
Dotson had more yards (523) and touchdowns (seven) as a rookie in 2022 despite missing five full games and having his snaps limited in two others. He didn't miss any games in his sophomore campaign, but nearly everything else was a disappointment, including his target volume (4.9 per game) and efficiency stats (59.0 percent catch rate, 10.6 yards per catch, 6.2 yards per targe). His catch rate barely rose compared to 2022 -- even though his aDOT sunk from 13.5 to 9.3 -- and his yards after catch (YAC) average dropped from 3.9 to 2.4 (usually it rises when a player sees more short passes and fewer long ones). The main positives here are that Dotson never got benched, playing 82.2 percent of Washington's snaps on offense, and may now head into his third NFL season with a new head coach and new starting quarterback. The 2022 first-round pick nonetheless figures to come off the board much later in 2024 fantasy drafts than he did this past summer, with the down season in Year 2 casting serious doubt upon his future.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
Dotson is the first-round rookie wideout most likely to be overlooked in fantasy drafts. That's partially because he was a second-rounder in most mock drafts, and partially because he landed in a Washington offense with Carson Wentz at quarterback and Terry McLaurin as the No. 1 receiver. The recent history of poor organizational management doesn't help, to say the least, and competition for targets could be tough this year if WR Curtis Samuel and TE Logan Thomas manage to get healthy and stay that way. On the other hand, Dotson is a strong prospect if you press pause on the noise around him, coming out of Penn State with 2,757 career receiving yards, including 2,066 (and 20 TDs) in 21 games in his final two seasons. That production — about 100 yards and a TD per game — puts him right in line with other first-round wideouts, as does his 4.43 40-yard dash from the 2022 Combine. Dotson's a bit on the thin side at 5-11, 182, but he has the speed and polish to push for No. 2 WR status in Washington early in the season.
