Johnson tore his Achilles in Week 2 of the 2024 season, preventing him from building on a Pro Bowl 2023 campaign in which he posted 7.5 sacks and seven passes defensed. The 2022 first-round pick was the Jets' best all-around edge prior to getting hurt, and Johnson should return to a starting role once healthy, though his availability for the start of the regular season is uncertain. Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters Monday that Johnson (ankle) will travel with the Jets to London, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has missed three consecutive games after sustaining an ankle injury in the Jets' Week 2 loss to the Bills. However, traveling with the team for Sunday's matchup against the Broncos is an encouraging sign for his potential return. The 2022 first-round pick has struggled to stay healthy over the past two seasons, appearing in just four contests and recording 11 total tackles and one pass defended. His participation in practice throughout the week will likely serve as the best indication of whether he can return for the Week 6 affair in London.

Not much went right for the Jets in 2023, but the emergence of Johnson was one. After a quiet rookie season for the 2022 first-round pick, he more than doubled his defensive snap count and his production followed suit. Brought in to get after the quarterback, Johnson accomplished that goal by creating 56 total pressures (per PFF), good for a mark inside the top-25 in the league among edge rushers. Johnson also did enough as a run-stopper, tallying 20 tackles in the role. With Bryce Huff and John Franklin-Myers out of the picture, Johnson should have the chance to step into a leadership role along the defensive line and his production could take another jump forward in his third season as a pro.
Johnson was brought along slowly as a rookie, though he showed some flashes of the pass rushing potential that prompted the Jets to pick him 26th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. After finishing with 2.5 sacks in 2022, Johnson will push for more playing time in 2023, though he will have to earn it in a pass rushing rotation that added Will McDonald with the 15th overall pick in 2023 and is returning veterans Carl Lawson and John Franklin-Myers.
Viewed by some as a possible top-10 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Johnson slid to No. 26 before the Jets traded back into the first round to snag him. Coming off a productive senior season at Florida State that included 11.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss, Johnson should immediately bolster a Jets pass rush that has been lacking an effective edge rusher for years. Even if Carl Lawson comes back healthy from an Achilles' injury that kept him out for all of last season, Johnson should see plenty of playing time from the get-go in an edge rotation with Lawson and the versatile John-Franklin Myers.

Johnson posted Saturday that his placement on the PUP list to begin training camp was precautionary.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is recovering from an Achilles tear he suffered in Week 2 of the 2024 season. His post indicates that he's on track with his recovery but the Jets understandably aren't rushing the edge rusher back for the start of training camp. Per Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Johnson is expected to be activated and return to practice prior to the start of the regular season.
