2023 Fantasy Outlook
It’s time for Love in Green Bay. With Aaron Rodgers jetting to New York, the 2020 first-round pick is finally a starter after three years as an understudy. If he's to make Packers fans not long for Rodgers, he’ll have to do it with a young WR corps after veterans Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb joined Rodgers in New York. What’s left is an unimpressive collection of rookies, second-year “vets” and practice squad players. Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, both of whom had up-and-down rookie seasons last year, top the WR depth chart. The Packers drafted three wide receivers, highlighted by second-round pick Jayden Reed (5-11, 187, with 4.45 speed). They used another second-round pick on TE Luke Musgrave, who with 4.61 speed at 6-6, 253, has little competition for tight-end targets. At 6-4, 219, Love has a strong arm and is mobile, which could give him a stable rushing floor while the passing game rounds into form. The Packers hedged their bets with a one-year extension worth a guaranteed $13.5 million, rather than picking up Love’s fifth-year option for a guaranteed $20.3 million for 2024. And for this season at least, Love might be handing it to Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon behind a good offensive line more often than not. Read Past Outlooks

Signs one-year extension
QBGreen Bay Packers
May 2, 2023
Love agreed Tuesday with the Packers on a one-year extension worth up to $22.5 million, including $13.5 million fully guaranteed, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Love and the Packers found a workaround shortly before the deadline to lock in fifth-year options for 2020 first-round picks. The team apparently wasn't comfortable guaranteeing Love a $20.3 million salary for 2024, so instead he accepted a one-year extension with a smaller guarantee and a slightly higher ceiling. The 24-year-old is set to take over as Green Bay's starting quarterback after the Aaron Rodgers trade, leading an offense with Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon in the backfield and Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed projected as the top three wide receivers. The Packers took Reed in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft while also adding tight end Luke Musgrave in round two, tight end Tucker Kraft in round three and wideout Dontayvion Wicks in round five.

2020
The Packers took Love in the first round in 2020, and it was assumed he would supplant long-time starter Aaron Rodgers at some point. However, with Rodgers winning the MVP both of the last two years and signing a lucrative contract extension, Love may never get the chance to be the starting quarterback in Green Bay. Love did start one game last season, and he held his own in a tough environment in Kansas City. Opinions on him remain mixed, though, and no team offered the Packers enough to part with him over the offseason. As such, Love will remain in Green Bay for the time being and spend another season backing up Rodgers.
Not only did Love not see the field last season, the 26th overall pick in last year's draft couldn't even earn the backup job to Aaron Rodgers - he was the No. 3 QB most of the season. Love has a strong arm, but scouts criticized his accuracy and vision coming out of Utah State, as he was considered a project. This year, Love figures to move up to No. 2, but only after a good bit of offseason drama nearly left him as the No. 1 (Rodgers decided to stick around another year). Love will have all-world Davante Adams at his disposal if he gets on the field this year, while TE Robert Tonyan proved a good red-zone target last season and Marquez Valdes-Scantling is a downfield threat. At 6-4, 219, Love is big and mobile, which at least helps his fantasy profile if he disappoints as a passer.
Love took a step back in his junior season at Utah State following a stellar sophomore campaign, but his skills still made him a first-round pick in many mock drafts. With Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, few pegged Love to end up a Packer, but that's where he landed. The Packers even traded up to select him, so it's clear management likes his potential. Most quarterbacks taken in the first round these days start at some point in their first year, but that's a long shot in Love's case barring a Rodgers injury. Rodgers is under contract for four more seasons, but if the rookie develops like the Packers hope, they could go younger and cheaper at the position at some point in the coming years.
