2025 Fantasy Outlook
The Rams presumably intend to play 2024 third-round pick Blake Corum at some point, but he spent his rookie year on the shelf while Williams was one of the volume leaders at running back for a second straight season. Rams coach Sean McVay has long shown a preference to heavily work one running back instead of utilizing a rotation, and GM Les Snead said this March that he wants to sign Williams to a long-term extension (the 2022 fifth-round pick is in the final season of his rookie contract). Pass blocking is one big reason McVay values Williams, along with short-yardage success, but there wasn't much else to like last season as his rushing average dropped from 5.0 in 2023 to 4.1 in 2024. Williams also fumbled six times, losing four, including one in the playoffs. Blitz pickups are helpful, but Williams also needs to do the other little things right to add value and justify massive workloads, as his lack of speed (4.65 40) and size (202 pounds) leaves him with a thinner margin of error and lower frequency of big plays relative to the other RBs that took 20-plus touches per game over the past couple seasons. Agrees to three-year extension
Williams and the Rams agreed to terms Tuesday on a three-year, $33 million contract extension, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams had been heading into the final year of his rookie contract, but the 2022 fifth-round pick now locks in a three-year extension that includes $23 million guaranteed, per Schefter. Coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing campaigns, Williams remains locked in atop Los Angeles' backfield depth chart with 2024 third-round pick Blake Corum and rookie fourth-rounder Jarquez Hunter available as backup options. Williams has proven himself a tremendous fit for coach Sean McVay's tendency to utilize a single workhorse running back, a role he's translated into 31 total touchdowns across the last two years (28 regular-season appearances). With his contract situation resolved, Williams can be considered one of the safest RB options coming off the board in the early rounds of fantasy drafts due to his having a legitimate shot to lead the league in carries. Fantasy managers may continue to exercise some caution regarding Los Angeles' offense as a whole until a specific timetable for the return of Matthew Stafford (back) is provided, though the Rams have expressed continued confidence that the veteran QB will be available for Week 1.

Williams will be an interesting case study after his improbable 2023 breakout season, one where he ran for nearly 100 yards per game while scoring 15 touchdowns (12 rushing, three receiving) in just 12 games. Coach Sean McVay values Williams' pass-blocking abilities to the point that the RB almost never left the field last year, playing an average of 55 snaps per game. It's an incredibly heavy workload for a running back, especially one listed at 5-9, 195. In other words, it feels like Williams' best season might have already occurred. Not just because his stats are due for general regression, but because Williams is one of the smaller starting RBs and has already had trouble holding up physically. The 2022 fifth-round pick missed much of his rookie offseason due to a broken foot and then suffered a high-ankle sprain Week 1 on special teams, ultimately finishing the season with 44 touches in 10 games. Last year, Williams quickly earned a starring role but later missed five weeks (four games) with another ankle injury. There's a reason you don't see 195-pound backs taking 20 carries per game in the NFL, and the Rams may have doubts of their own given that they used a third-round pick on RB Blake Corum this April. Corum's involvement in the offense would lower Williams' fantasy ceiling but increase his odds of staying healthy -- a poor trade-off short term but perhaps beneficial in the long run.
