Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Drafted eighth overall last year, Penix replaced Kirk Cousins as Atlanta’s starter for the final three games and proved ready for the job. Cousins is still on the roster, but it’s Penix’s show this season. At first glance, Penix’s numbers don't impress. In fact, his on-target and completion percentages ranked 45th and 43rd, respectively, among 46 quarterbacks with at least 100 attempts. But it was only a 105-attempt sample, and one in which 5.7 percent of his throws were drops (fourth highest) and 14.3 percent of his attempts went 20-plus yards downfield (3rd) for an average target depth of 10.5 yards (2nd). Two of Penix's three interceptions hit a receiver in the hands before being bobbled away to a defender, and he averaged 7.4 YPA despite completing just 58.1 percent of his passes. His accuracy numbers likely will improve this year with the help of more short passes, and if his efficiency ticks up he’ll at least be a strong QB2 for superflex leagues. A lack of rushing, though, will cap his fantasy value unless he develops into one of the league's top passers. He has help to make that happen, starting with an excellent offensive line. RB Bijan Robinson is a capable pass catcher in addition to spearheading the rushing attack, giving Atlanta a well-rounded group of playmakers with WR Drake London, WR Darnell Mooney and TE Kyle Pitts. Familiarity with second-year offensive coordinator Zac Robinson could benefit everyone, putting Penix in position for a breakout year if he just holds up his end of the bargain. Read Past Outlooks

To be placed on IR
The Falcons will place Penix (knee) on injured reserve.
ANALYSIS
"We are working through the medical process to determine the severity of the injury," the Falcons said in a statement Monday. "[Penix] will be placed on the reserve/injured list and miss a minimum of four games. With the move, Kirk Cousins will assume the starting quarterback role for the Falcons at this time." It's been reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that Penix aggravated an existing bone bruise and knee sprain while also suffering damage to the ACL in his left knee, the same one in which Penix already had the ACL reconstructed twice previously during his college days. Penix won't be eligible to return until Week 16 against the Cardinals, at the earliest.

Penix was the surprise pick of this year’s draft. Not necessarily because he went in the top 10, but because it was the Falcons who drafted him eighth overall. Atlanta signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year deal with $100 million guaranteed in March, which means Penix is headed to the bench. The left-hander has a cannon for an arm, the strongest in this year’s draft, and is an accurate downfield passer who also consistently hits tight windows. While the 6-2 Penix is skilled at working through progressions, he at times was inaccurate on intermediate targets because he threw a beat late and lacked touch. The biggest knock, though, is his medical history -- season-ending injuries to both shoulders and two ACL tears in his right knee at Indiana before transferring to Washington. Despite the injuries, he’s still “functionally mobile” and was sacked just 32 times on more than 1,700 dropbacks. At Washington, he led the nation in passing yards per game each of the last two seasons. In Atlanta, he’s the backup, but the 36-year-old Cousins is coming off a midseason Achilles injury and, unlike Penix, doesn’t have a great arm. If Penix gets a shot, he’ll have quality weapons in RB Bijan Robinson, WR Drake London and TE Kyle Pitts. Stay Tuned.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Making Week 9 return
Penix, who missed the Falcons' Week 8 loss to the Dolphins with a knee injury, will start Sunday's game against the Patriots, Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Penix was dealing with a bone bruise in his left knee that he suffered in Week 7 against the 49ers, but he was able to work back to a full practice Friday after opening the week with consecutive limited practices. The second-year signal-caller's return will prevent Kirk Cousins, who struggled considerably against Miami, from making another start after failing to move the offense during Atlanta's 34-10 loss.
