Won't play in Week 18
Arizona placed Benson (ankle) on injured reserve Tuesday, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Benson will end up missing the final three games of his rookie season due to the ankle injury he sustained in a Dec. 15 win over the Patriots. Before getting hurt, the third-round pick out of Florida State had solidified his spot as the top backup to James Conner. Over 13 appearances, Benson gained 291 yards and a touchdown on 63 carries (4.6 average) while reeling in all six of his targets for 59 yards.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Benson fell to the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft in part because of durability concerns related to a brutal multi-ligament knee tear at Oregon at the end of the 2020 season. He came back strong at Florida State in 2022 and 2023 to play 26 consecutive games and score 24 touchdowns, though his upright running style invites big hits at times. Beyond those concerns, Benson is close to blue-chip across most considerations. Few runners combine home run speed with standout raw power, but Benson showed both traits at FSU and then confirmed it at the Combine with a 4.39 40 at 6-0, 216. He was immensely explosive as a mid-volume, high-efficiency runner for the Seminoles, averaging 6.1 yards on 316 carries across two seasons, so he could make an impact in Arizona coming out of the bullpen behind James Conner. Conner had one of his best seasons in 2023 and won't be pushed aside easily, but his extensive injury history gives reason to project a start or two for Benson in an improving Arizona offense.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Coach optimistic about Year 2
Coach Jonathan Gannon believes Benson has the potential to develop into a starting-caliber running back in his second NFL season, per Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site. "You see certain teams out there with two '1s,' I would say, and I think we should have two '1s' next year," Gannon said of Benson and James Conner.
ANALYSIS
Gannon's statement was preceded by a qualifier that Benson will need to take "the necessary jump from Year 1 to Year 2," but that optimistic tone is still encouraging on the heels of a disappointing rookie season from the 2024 third-round draft pick. Benson had just 291 rushing yards and one touchdown while backing up Conner, and the Cardinals opted to hand Conner an extension rather than allowing the veteran starter to walk in free agency.
