Dominant win as underdog

Volkov defeated Alexandr Romanov via TKO (punches) at 2:16 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Volkov has been doing this a long time and has been in there against a lot of quality opponents while fighting for multiple organizations. He's going to beat you if you don't show up ready to go, and Romanov clearly wasn't ready for this one. Volkov is known as a volume striker, but everything he threw in this one seemed to damage Romanov in a major way. He eventually forced his opponent to the canvas (after Romanov's failed takedown attempts) and rained down countless shots before referee Mark Smith pulled the plug. Now 34 years of age, Volkov has had difficulty winning the "big" fight in his 6.5 years with the UFC, but he's still one of the better heavyweights on the roster. The big man has won three of his last four and suggested a matchup against Ciryl Gane in his post-fight press conference. That's the type of fight that could get Volkov back in the title conversation, and also one in which he shouldn't have to worry much about the takedown prowess of his opponent.

Volkov is set to take on Alexandr Romanov in a heavyweight bout at UFC Vegas 71 on Mar. 11, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Volkov, who most recently defeated Jair Rozenstruik in June, will face off with Alexandr Romanov in March. The 34-year-old Russian fighter currently boasts a 9-4 record in the UFC (ranked eighth in the heavyweight division), and he will look to continue climbing the ranks when he matches up with Romanov.
Gets right back in win column
HeavyweightUFC
June 4, 2022
Volkov defeated Jair Rozenstruik via TKO (punches) at 2:12 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It was imperative for Volkov to put together a strong bounce back effort on the heels of his first-round submission loss to Tom Aspinall in London just a few months ago, and he did just that. Volkov is known as a volume-over-power guy despite standing 6-foot-7, but a straight right hand and a three-shot combination that followed was enough for Herb Dean to pull the plug on this one despite the fact Rozenstruik was still standing and appeared to be defending himself. It's the 23rd knockout of Volkov's career and his fifth since joining the UFC in November 2016. The big Russian has proven himself to be one of the top heavyweights in the world for several years and has done so in multiple organizations. Volkov will look for a bit more consistency moving forward, as he has alternated wins and losses in his last five fights dating back to February 2021.
Booked for headliner

April 17, 2022
Volkov will take on Jair Rozenstruik in a headliner heavyweight matchup at UFC Fight Night on June 4, Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Volkov had a main event fight at UFC London in March, but he lost to Tom Aspinall via submission (straight armlock). He'll attempt to bounce back in another five-round matchup against Rozenstruik, who most recently fought in September and lost to Curtis Blaydes via unanimous decision at UFC 266. Volkov has advantages in height and reach.
Quickly taps to Tom Aspinall
HeavyweightUFC
March 19, 2022
Volkov lost to Tom Aspinall via submission (straight armlock) at 3:45 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in London.
ANALYSIS
Volkov has been one of the top heavyweights in the world for a long time. He has fought all over the world and against plenty of high-end competition, but he was never able to get out of first gear in this one, and the end result was a lopsided defeat against one of the division's brightest young fighters. Outside of a handful of front kicks, Volkov could generate nothing offensively. That was bad, but the real issue was how easily Aspinall planted him on his back. Outside of a fight against Curtis Blaydes back in June 2020 when he was taken down a whopping 14 times, Volkov has always done a decent job of remaining upright, but he wasn't able to here. And with a big bruising guy like Aspinall on top of him, Volkov was essentially done. The big Russian is 4-4 in his past eight fights dating back to October 2018, and that simply isn't going to get the job done.
Still hopeful for main event
HeavyweightUFC
February 28, 2022
Volkov has yet to make the trip to England for his scheduled matchup against Tom Aspinall on March 19, despite encouragement from the UFC, Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Any Russian athlete is unlikely to receive a warm reception in any context given the events occurring on the world stage, but travel restrictions appear to be a possibility should the situation continue to escalate. Some promotions, such as the European-based KSW, have even canceled fights featuring Russian athletes. It doesn't appear as if the UFC is approaching that territory just yet, but Dana White and company appear to be heavily encouraging Volkov to leave early just to be safe. The proposed matchup is still a few weeks away, and Volkov and his team have apparently been hesitant to depart early. He remains a slight betting favorite of roughly (-135) for the matchup as of Monday afternoon.
