MLB DFS: FanDuel Plays and Strategy for Sunday, September 28

Kevin Gausman and the Jays will look to clinch the AL East, so a few of their players should be included on your Sunday FanDuel MLB DFS lineups.
MLB DFS: FanDuel Plays and Strategy for Sunday, September 28

It's the final day of the MLB regular season. Most campaigns will end Sunday, though not as many as back in the day. All 15 games will start within 15 minutes with the first ones at 3:05 p.m. EDT. There will be DFS contests during the playoffs, but here are my final recommendations for the regular season.

Pitching

Cristopher Sanchez, PHI vs. MIN ($10,300): Sanchez was great last year and has been just as good in 2025 as the lefty has posted a 2.57 ERA, 9.35 K/9 rate, and 0.55 HR/9 rate. He's got another chance to bolster his Cy Young resume on Sunday against a Twins side that's going to finish bottom-10 in runs scored.

Kevin Gausman, TOR vs. TAM ($10,100): Gausman has an 1.77 ERA from his last five starts and a. 3.47 overall. The Rays list an average offense, but their season is ending and the Blue Jays have big postseason plans and I expect more energy from Gausman and his teammates.

Clayton Kershaw, LAD at SEA ($7,800): Will Kershaw get to make a proper start? He's retiring at the end of the season  And while the Dodgers are headed to the playoffs, there's a chance Kershaw won't be in the rotation especially with Emmitt Sheehan's pitching. The future Hall of Famer has registered a 3.52 ERA, and the Mariners don't really have anything left to play for since they can't catch the Yankees or Blue Jays for the best record in the AL. Sometimes, on the final day of the MLB regular season, vibes and speculation rule the day.

Top Targets

This has been a weird and fantastic year for Bobby Witt ($3,800). He's going to fall just below a bunch of round numbers hitting .295 with 46 doubles and 38 stolen bases, yet those are still tremendous stats. The lefty Jeffrey Springs has a 4.81 ERA at home, so Witt can still pad those stats on Sunday.

Though Freddie Freeman ($3,700) may not play the full game Sunday given he's a veteran and key to the Dodgers' title hopes, a couple of at-bats may be all he needs. The lefty has gone .294 with 23 homers and 39 doubles while slugging .500 the last three weeks. Bryce Miller never managed to get on track this season by struggling to a 5.53 ERA across 17 starts. And even though Seattle's stadium is pitcher-friendly, he produced an 1.8 HR/9 rate there.

Bargain Bats

Sal Frelick ($3,100) managed to get his average up to .290 while adding 12 homers to his 19 steals. He figured out how to make the most of his home park with an .870 OPS. Brady Singer has a 4.74 road ERA while lefties have produced 15 of the 18 home runs he's allowed.

Since joining MLB, Jung Hoo Lee ($3,000) has batted .273 against righties. The southpaw doesn't deliver many homers, though his 12 triples and 31 doubles are impressive. I mostly wanted a lefty against McCade Brown as he enters with a 7.54 ERA while southpaws have hit .349 against.

Stacks to Consider

Phillies vs. Twins (Simeon Woods Richardson): Kyle Schwarber ($4,400), Bryce Harper ($3,600), Bryson Stott ($2,900)

It's the classic all-lefty Phillies stack when a righty is on the mound. Not only did Woods Richardson not make any strides this year, he got worse by posting a 4.77 FIP while his road ERA is 5.89. Philly's southpaw trio can do some damage against such a pitcher.

Schwarber has enjoyed an incredible season at the plate with 56 homers and 132 RBI while even adding 10 stolen bases. All that, and he's somehow slugged .670 at home. Harper has a .560 slugging percentage at home. And over the last three weeks, he's recorded a .865 OPS. Stott has struggled this season, yet he's done enough to get up to 13 home runs and 24 steals. He's also batted .264 against righties and .274 at home.

Nationals vs. White Sox (Shane Smith): James Wood ($3,300), CJ Abrams ($3,300), Luis Garcia ($2,700)

As a rookie, Smith has posted a 3.98 ERA and 4.25 FIP. The righty has also put up a 4.39 ERA and 1.3 HR/9 rate on the road while doing a solid job at home to keep the ball in the park. Lefties have also hit 13 of the 17 homers he's given up, so this is a three-southpaw stack.

Wood is an undisciplined player (he flew past 200 strikeouts), but still managed 31 homers and 15 stolen bases. He's also notched an .835 OPS versus righties. Abrams has largely replicated his 2024 performance with a better batting average (.258) to go with 19 homers, 31 steals, and slugging .482 against righties. For the second straight season, Garcia has reached double-digit homers and stolen bases. He can't hit lefties at all, but has gone .273 and slugged .464 versus righties.
