Closer Watch
Nationals -- Tyler Clippard blew his third save of the season Friday when he entered the ninth with a one-run lead against the Braves. Clippard not only gave up the lead, but also put his team down a run when a Michael Bourn triple allowed Dan Uggla and Paul Janish to score. Friday happened to be Clippard's third appearance in a row that he has given up at least two runs, and has seen his ERA jump from an impressive 1.83 to an average 3.19. If Clippard's next appearance isn't spotless, Davey Johnson will have to start to reconsidering his ninth inning options.

Braves -- The normally unhittable Craig Kimbrel gave up a home run to Danny Espinosa in the ninth inning Friday after his team established a one-run lead in the ninth after falling behind 9-0 in the fifth. Chad Durbin came into the game in the eleventh with his team up a run again, and did the job Kimbrel normally does so well. The Espinosa homer should be consider just a blip on the radar of what has been another great season for Kimbrel.

Twins -- With a one-run lead in the eleventh inning, Glen Perkins was given the opportunity to get his fifth save of the season, and he did so while only giving up one hit. It does seem that the Twinkies are going with a closer by committee approach as Jared Burton has also been called upon to finish up games. The fact that the Twins are not winning that many games this year means that even if either Perkins or Burton establishes himself as the full-time closer, it wouldn't mean much because they are rarely in need of one.

Recommended Pickup

Christian Friedrich, P, COL -- Coors Field has not been kind to Friedrich so far this year as the Rockies rookie starter has a 8.23 ERA at the hitter-friendly confines. On the other hand, Friedrich has found some success on the road, and lucky for him there aren't many more pitcher-friendly parks than the home of the Padres, where he will start on Sunday. Not only does Friedrich hold a 3.79 ERA in road games this year, he also loves to pitch against the Padres, who have struck out 12 times and only scored two earned runs in the 11 innings Friedrich has pitched against them this year. He's worthy of a quick stream option and should produce respectable results.

Other recent recommendations:Jeremy Guthrie, Sergio Romo, Francisco Rodriguez, Anthony Gose and Jacob Turner
