Closer Watch

Boston - Koji Uehara bounced back nicely from his third blown save of the season Saturday, tossing a perfect ninth inning Tuesday at Seattle to secure the victory for the Red Sox. While he did not notch a strikeout, he was the sole pitcher to avoid yielding a hit on a night in which the Mariners racked up a whopping 13, including two home runs by Kendrys Morales. The slugger came to the plate late against Uehara, who proceeded to induce a measly groundout en route to his fifth consecutive scoreless frame. In his last 15 outings, Uehara has now given up just one run with a 19:2 K:BB ratio across 14 innings, ensuring his status as one of the stingiest closers in the game, despite earning the gig only recently in the latter half of June.

St. Louis - In that same period, Edward Mujica endured a rough stretch that leached into July, as he surrendered runs in four of six appearances. No matter, he succeeded on 3-of-4 save opportunities during the span, alleviating the stress on a suddenly-rising ERA. However, his last four appearances have been smooth sailing for the first-time fireman, as he has racked up one win, three saves, and a 3:0 K:BB ratio in 3.1 perfect innings. With his wobbles presumably behind him, Mujica's status as closer on a Cardinals team that holds MLB's top record will keep him among the league leaders in saves for the entirety of the season, barring injury or a complete meltdown.

Recommended Pickup

Ricky Nolasco, P, LAD - The proof is in the pudding, so to say, following Nolasco's first career start in a uniform outside of the Marlins' organization. After he was dealt to the Dodgers as a part of Miami's continued fire sale this past weekend, he took the hill Tuesday, surrendering just one run on four hits and no walks, while posting five strikeouts in seven frames. Meanwhile, in his preceding seven nods, he experienced some troubles yet still managed to record a 4.15 ERA, 1.338 WHIP, and 34:11 K:BB ratio in 43.1 innings. Even if the stretch marks his most volatile of 2013, a fresh start with a much-improved Dodgers offense at his disposal should aid in maintaining a stat line that includes 11 quality starts in 19 appearances this year.
