Transaction Analysis: Lawrie's a Blue Jay

This article is part of our Transaction Analysis series.

Here's a look at some of the most notable roster moves in baseball this week:

MONDAY

Indians

Chris Perez, RHP - placed on the 15-day DL (right shoulder)
Nick Hagadone, LHP - recalled from Triple-A Columbus

Impact: The Indians closer will be out for a minimum of 15 days as he deals with some soreness in his right shoulder. Perez saved a combined 75 games over the last two years and converted six of eight save opportunities this year before the injury. Vinnie Pestano will fill the ninth-inning role for the time being. Pestano had a 2.50 career ERA and five career saves coming into the 2013 season but owned a 5.25 season ERA of 5.25 heading into the closer role. Hagadone provides the Tribe with an extra left-handed arm out of the pen, and can be avoided in just about all formats.

Mariners

Dustin Ackley, 2B - optioned to Triple-A Tacoma
Nick Franklin, IF - contract purchased from Triple-A Tacoma

Impact: The Mariners finally tired of watching Ackley flounder at the plate, and shipped him to Triple-A to work on his offensive approach. The 25-year-old second baseman had a disappointing 2012 season and managed to hit just .205 with one home run and eight RBI in 45 games this year. Franklin has fared well with the bat this year at Triple-A (.324, 4 HR, 20 RBI in 39 games) and should get most of the playing time at second. While his potential for mixed league

Franklin has fared well with the bat this year at Triple-A (.324, 4 HR, 20 RBI in 39 games) and should get most of the playing time at second. While his potential for mixed league value is questionable, he could be worth a shot in deeper AL-only leagues.

Marlins

Alex Sanabia, RHP - placed on the 15-day DL (right groin)
Dan Jennings, LHP - recalled from Triple-A New Orleans

Impact: Sanabia was unremarkable through his first 10 starts this year, going 3-7 with a 4.88 ERA and a strikeout rate of just 5.04 K/9. He'll miss at least a couple of weeks with a strained right groin. Nate Eovaldi will come off the DL on Friday to fill Sanabia's roster spot. Eovaldi missed the first couple months of the season with inflammation in his right shoulder and has a career record of 5-15 with a 4.15 career ERA. He could have some value in NL-only leagues and possibly in deeper mixed leagues. Jennings will work in relief.

TUESDAY

Angels

Tommy Hanson, RHP - activated from the restricted list
Sean Burnett, LHP - placed on the 15-day DL (left elbow)

Impact: Hanson missed more than three weeks after he was placed on the restricted list in early May due to a death in the family. The 26-year-old righty has posted solid numbers over his career, though his ERA didincrease every year from 2009 to 2012. He was 13-10 with a 4.48 ERA for the Braves last year and returns to a 2-1 record and a 3.86 ERA in five starts with the Angels this year. He takes over the rotation spot that was left vacant when the Halos designated Billy Buckner for assignment Sunday. Burnett served as a left-handed specialist out of the Angels pen and will miss some time due to inflammation in his left elbow.

Padres

Yasmani Grandal, C - activated from the restricted list
John Baker, C - optioned to Triple-A Tucson

Impact: Grandal has finished serving a 50-game suspension for testosterone use and figures to get a fair amount of playing time behind the plate. The young catcher fared well with the bat in his first year at the major league level last season, as he hit .297 with eight home runs and 36 RBI in 60 games. While it would appear unlikely that he'd be able to maintain that kind of pace over the course of a full season at this point, he's still a pretty decent fantasy option. Nick Hundley now moves into a backup role, likely getting a couple of starts a week. Baker hit just .150 (6-for-40) while serving as Hundley's backup.

WEDNESDAY

Angels

Jered Weaver, RHP - activated from the 15-day DL
Mark Lowe, RHP - designated for assignment

Impact: After missing more than seven weeks with an injury to his non-throwing elbow, Weaver finally returned to action Wednesday. Weaver has become one of the top starting pitchers in baseball in recent years, and put together an impressive 38-13 mark and 2.59 ERA the last two seasons. While it's not certain at this point who will lose their spot in the rotation to make room for Weaver, the smart money would probably be on Joe Blanton, who has been just awful. Lowe struggled with serious control issues this year, giving up 11 walks and 12 earned runs in 11.2 innings of relief.

Blue Jays

Brett Lawrie, 3B - placed on the 15-day DL (left ankle)

Impact: The Jays third baseman has landed on the DL for the second time this year, this time as a result of a sprained left ankle. Lawrie missed the first couple weeks of the season with a ribcage injury before going on to hit just .209 with five home runs and 14 RBI in 37 games. It doesn't appear at this point that he'll miss much more than the minimum 15 days. Mark DeRosa and Maicer Izturis should see some extra playing time while Lawrie is out, but both can be ignored in the majority of fantasy leagues. The Jays also shuffled their pitching staff, designating Ramon Ortiz for assignment, optioning Thad Weber to Triple-A Buffalo, recalling Todd Redmond and purchasing the contracts of Neil Wagner and Juan Perez from Triple-A. None of the new faces on the pitching staff are likely to do anything to help a fantasy team.

THURSDAY

Twins

Trevor Plouffe, 3B - placed on the 15-day DL (left calf)
Chris Colabello, 1B-OF - recalled from Triple-A Rochester

Impact: Plouffe went straight from the 7-day DL to the 15-day DL without even appearing in a game. Plouffe had landed on the DL with a concussion May 22 and was just activated Wednesday. Now, he'll be forced to miss at least another couple of weeks as he recovers from a strained left calf. He's hitting .254 with four home runs and 17 RBI on the season. The light-hitting tandem of Eduardo Escobar and Jamey Carroll should continue to split the third base duties, but both can be avoided in most leagues. Colabello will be used in a backup capacity and should not have any fantasy relevance.
