Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Despite a few early start times Wednesday, there are still 10 games to choose from for the main slate on Yahoo. There will be several struggling pitchers in action, so there could be plenty of high-scoring affairs. Let's discuss the matchups and some players to consider adding to your lineup.

Pitchers

The Padres are going for it. They were very busy at the trade deadline with the headline move being the addition of Mike Clevinger to their starting rotation. He joins another pitcher who has performed very well this season in Dinelson Lamet ($50), who will start Wednesday against the Angels. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start this season and he's missing a ton of bats, leaving him with a 32.9 percent strikeout rate. Although the Angels have had a couple of offensive explosions lately, they have scored four runs or fewer in eight of their last 10 games.

After finally beating the Rays on Tuesday, the Yankees will look to take the series finale with Jordan Montgomery ($30) on the mound. He's done an excellent job of limiting base runners with a 1.07 WHIP, but maybe his most impressive stat is his mere 28 percent hard-hit rate allowed. While he's not much of a strikeout pitcher, he's still a budget-friendly option to consider with the Rays striking out the second-most times in baseball.

Top Targets

There hasn't been a lot to like about this season for the Red Sox. If there is a silver lining, it's that Xander Bogaerts ($22) is playing well once again with a .384 wOBA and a 140 wRC+. His .258 ISO would also be the highest mark of his career. This could be another opportunity for him to shine with the Braves starting Robbie Erlin ($26), who has a 6.43 FIP and has allowed six home runs across 18 innings.

After a disappointing 2019 campaign, Jose Ramirez ($18) has bounced back in a big way for the Indians. He's once again showed a combination of power and speed with eight home runs and eight steals on his way to a .364 wOBA. He's 12-for-37 (.324) with three home runs and two doubles across his last nine games and will be facing the underwhelming Jakob Junis ($28), who has followed up his 1.43 WHIP last year with a 1.58 WHIP through his first three starts.

Bargain Bats

An interesting player to keep an eye on for the Red Sox game is J.D. Martinez ($13), who has been out the past two games with a hand injury. If he returns in this game, he could be a bargain with Erlin on the mound for the Braves. He certainly has had success hitting at Fenway Park, posting at least a .367 wOBA there in both of the last two seasons.

Among a lineup that is full of power hitters, Luis Arraez ($8) certainly doesn't fit that makeup. He had a .104 ISO last year and has been even worse in that department this season with a .043 ISO. He's there to hit for average, which hasn't exactly been working for him this season since he's batting .272. However, he still has just a 10.9 percent strikeout rate and could be worth considering for this matchup with the White Sox and Reynaldo Lopez ($27). Lopez had a 1.46 WHIP last year and has a 2.00 WHIP through three starts this season.

Stacks to Consider

Braves vs. Mike Kickham ($25), Red Sox: Marcell Ozuna ($22), Dansby Swanson ($21), Austin Riley ($19)

The Braves have taken advantage of the Red Sox's suspect pitching staff, scoring 16 runs across the first two games of this series. Now they will face Kickham, who hasn't pitched in the majors since making two relief appearances in 2014. He hasn't been anything special in the minors, posting a FIP of at least 4.17 at Triple-A in both of the last two seasons. Ozuna launched three home runs Tuesday and Riley has been hot for a prolonged stretch, hitting 14-for-35 (.400) with three home runs and three doubles over the last nine games.

Padres vs. Julio Teheran ($25), Angels: Fernando Tatis Jr. ($28), Manny Machado ($26), Eric Hosmer ($20)

Don't be surprised if the Padres are the most popular stack of the night. They lead all of baseball with a .836 team OPS and have strengthened their lineup further with the addition of Mitch Moreland ($19). Teheran has been flat out awful through five appearances, posting a 7.68 FIP and a 1.70 WHIP. Hosmer is extremely appealing given his reasonable salary and the fact that he's on pace to set a new career high with a .939 OPS.

Astros vs. Kolby Allard ($30), Rangers: George Springer ($19), Yuli Gurriel ($17), Jose Altuve ($11)

Allard allowed just one hit across 5.1 innings in his last start against the Athletics, but he issued four walks that contributed to him allowing two runs. He continues to have problems keeping men off base, following up his 1.57 WHIP last year with a 1.56 WHIP this season. Altuve is a name that stands out for an Astros stack given his reduced salary. Even though he's struggled this year, he has a 146 wRC+ against left-handed pitchers for his career. He's also posted back-to-back multi-hit performances and has at least two hits in six of his last 11 games, overall.
