Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Volpe was a disappointment in his sophomore season, losing more than a third of his homers despite nearly 90 more plate appearances on the season. His defense deservedly keeps him in the lineup every day, and his speed somehow allowed him to accumulate half of his plate appearances in the leadoff spot despite a .293 OBP both overall as well as when he hit first in the lineup. Who are we to judge since the club made it to the World Series? We only bring it up because Volpe's run scoring total will likely decline if the Yankees find a better fit for leadoff, as Volpe's speed makes him a better fit to lead off a 1980's Yankee lineup than it does a modern day one. That would leave us with his steals as his most redeeming quality, and 12 of those came from the leadoff spot. Volpe did improve his strikeout rate, yet it, his walk rate and his ability to lay off pitches out of the zone all remain below league average. Beware the Yankee tariff, because the pinstripes make this player appear better than he actually is at this moment. Read Past Outlooks

First multi-hit effort of season
Volpe went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 9-4 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Volpe's RBI single in the fourth inning sparked a three-run inning that gave the Yankees plenty of breathing room. The shortstop has hit safely in six of seven games this season, but this was his first multi-hit effort, lifting his batting average to .286 on the year. He's added four home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored with a 2:7 BB:K. He hit 33 homers and added a total of 120 RBI across 319 contests the last two regular seasons combined, but he's off to a strong start in 2025.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2023
2022
Seen as a long shot to break camp entering spring training, Volpe won the starting job at shortstop for the Yankees with his performance in the Grapefruit League and went on total 601 plate appearances as a rookie. At age 21/22, he hit 21 homers and stole 24 bases, but his batting line settled at just .209/.283/.383. He totaled a meager 122 runs-plus-RBI while stuck primarily in the bottom third of the batting order, though he made 28 starts out of the leadoff spot. Volpe makes for an interesting case study entering 2024 because everything under the hood looks bad, but further development should be expected for the former top prospect. It's possible his crash course last season accelerates that development and Volpe quickly becomes the star player some evaluators expected, but right now he's looking like a playing-time-dependent accumulator. The Yankees stuck by him all year despite some low lows, and a long leash should be expected again in 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Demotion not considered
In regard to the possibility of Volpe being demoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said they "haven't talked about it," reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old appeared poised for a breakout sophomore campaign as he posted a .282/.352/.432 slash line with six homers and 11 steals through the first two months of the season, but he has a .602 OPS since the start of June. Cashman continues to believe that Volpe is clearly the organization's best option at shortstop, and his Gold Glove as a rookie last season and his plus-12 OAA this year certainly indicate his positive presence despite the offensive struggles. For now, it appears Volpe will continue to iron out his offensive approach in the majors.
