Late Friday night (10:30 p.m. ET) in Provo, BYU will look to continue a strong start to the season. After some offseason tumult, the Cougars have climbed into the AP Top 25 and are asserting themselves as Big 12 contender. West Virginia…also has a football team.
Hey, at least Rich Rodriguez is back! Of course, when it comes to betting, it's not just about which team is better, but how much better you can imagine a team being on a given night. In this case, a late Friday night in Provo.
BYU vs West Virginia Betting Odds
Spread: BYU -18.5 (BetMGM Sportsbook), West Virginia +19.5 (DraftKings Sportsbook)
Total: Over 45.5 (ESPN Bet); Under 46.5 (Caesars Sportsbook)
Moneyline: BYU -1200 (FanDuel Sportsbook), West Virginia +850 (DraftKings Sportsbook)
If you're curious and don't normally look into moneyline betting, that BYU moneyline would yield a robust $1.67 on a bet of $20. The Cougars aren't quite a three-touchdown favorite at home, but for the team to cover the spread, they do need to win comfortably. Expectations across the board are that BYU will beat West Virginia, but will this be a breezy victory?

BYU vs. West Virginia Betting Picks
Left with uncertainty at quarterback this offseason, the BYU staff turned to true freshman Bear Bachmeier. He has stepped into the role with aplomb, as he's completed 67.8 percent of his passes with six touchdowns against zero picks. Bachmeier has also rushed for 163 yards and four touchdowns and hasn't even fumbled the ball. That's not usually what one gets from a freshman quarterback. He's a reliable "game manager," to use the well-worn parlance, for a team that ranks 13th in defensive SP+ and sixth in special teams SP+.
Colorado did give BYU a challenge, but BYU won, and that game was in Boulder. The Buffaloes aren't a terribly good team. They rank 59th in SP+. West Virginia, though, dreams of ranking 59th in SP+ right about now. RichRod's return to the program he led to great heights has been tough. The Mountaineers are 2-3, and that does include a win over Pitt in the Backyard Brawl. However, both Kansas and Utah have throttled West Virginia. The team ranks 83rd in SP+, placing it below Western Kentucky and Virginia Tech, which recently fired its head coach.
If that wasn't enough, former lead back Jahiem White is out for the season with a knee injury. His replacement as the number-one back Tye Edwards is questionable with an undisclosed issue. Starting quarterback Nicco Marchiol is going to miss the rest of the season with a foot injury, and his backup, Jaylen Henderson, is also sidelined.
All of that is to say that, sizable spread aside, if the Cougars are legit and serious, they should be covering this spread.

BYU vs West Virginia Betting Predictions
The over/under total of 48.5 indicates the expectation of a low-scoring game for one of these teams. That team, one safely assumes, is the Mountaineers. They rank 96th in offensive SP+ and are now significantly banged up offensively.
I would be highly surprised if West Virginia scores 20 points, and I think it's more likely to finish below 10 points than to reach 20. The BYU offense isn't necessarily built to run up the score, but the defense can keep a bad offense totally in check. "Demoralizing" is the word that will likely be used to describe this West Virginia loss.
