Weekly Rankings: Week 3 Value Meter

Weekly Rankings: Week 3 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Here are our rankings for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: three points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. Flex Rankings are for PPR leagues.

Typically, this article will be posted on Tuesday evenings, roughly around 6:00 pm PT.

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice.

I try not to rely too much on matchups early on - personnel changes, both on the field and in the coaching staffs, dictate so much change, as does a critical injury. By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick. Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should I start Player A vs. Player B?".

Quarterback

1.Peyton Manning DEN vs. Oak
2.Drew Brees NO vs. Ari
3.Aaron Rodgers GB at Cin
4.*Colin Kaepernick SF vs. Ind
Note: Sore foot, but full participant in practice. *** Officially listed as probable. ***
5.Robert Griffin WAS vs. Det
Note: Garbage time counts the same in our game as production at any other point. He could be facing that a lot, given how the Redskins' defense has looked so far.
6.Michael Vick PHI vs. KC
Note: Can we expect the same sort of production in a short week? Thursday games typically are lower scoring. But that short prep time also works in the Eagles' favor, with less time for the defense to prepare for their offense.
7.Matt Ryan ATL at Mia
Note: Even with a big lead, Ryan kept throwing, with 43 attempts. With Steven Jackson rumored to be out 2-to-4 weeks, we could see more of the same.
8.Matthew Stafford DET at Was
9.Eli Manning NYG at Car
Note: Ugly outing against the Broncos, but this has been the perfect storm in terms of getting Eli plenty of passing attempts. Last year, the Giants used the running game against Carolina. Could a repeat be in store?
10.*Tony Romo DAL vs. StL
Note: Will take a pain-killing shot for his ribs right before the game, as he did last week.
11.Carson Palmer ARZ at NO
Note: Threw another pick-six, albeit in a win so it wasn't quite a soul-crushing blow.
12.Cam Newton CAR vs. NYG
Note: Shaky production so far, and OC Mike Shula is trying to rely less on Newton's running ability.
13.Andrew Luck IND at SF
14.Alex Smith KC at Phi
Note: Threw in 57 rushing yards for his owners last week.
15.Russell Wilson SEA vs. Jax
Note: ***Won't have LT Russell Okung protecting him against Jason Babin and company.***
16.Sam Bradford STL at Dal
17.Philip Rivers SD at Ten
Note: We have to ask - is Mike McCoy that good in turning around a passing game? Rivers now has seven touchdowns in the first two weeks, against just one interception.
18.Tom Brady NE vs. TB
19.Andy Dalton CIN vs. GB
Note: Dalton's team won Monday, but Dalton himself wasn't particularly effective. I have concerns that he's capable of winning when the game is projected to be a shootout, as it is this week against Green Bay.
20.*Ryan Tannehill MIA vs. Atl
Note: Limited in Wednesday's practice with a sore shoulder. He's been sacked nine times so far this season. *** Listed as probable this week. ***
21.Matt Schaub HOU at Bal
22.Jake Locker TEN vs. SD
23.Jay Cutler CHI at Pit
Note: Nearly a 300-yard passer last week, but this week is a tough draw at Heinz Field.
24.Joe Flacco BAL vs. Hou
25.Josh Freeman TB at NE
Note: Laid a big egg in a great matchup. While we can blame the weather some, Freeman also made some poor decisions, including an awful INT. Some rumors of a huge rift between Freeman and Greg Schiano - this can't end well.
26.Ben Roethlisberger PIT vs. Chi
Note: It was a miracle that Roethlisberger was sacked just twice Monday night. He's under a ton of pressure these days.
27.Geno Smith NYJ vs. Buf
Note: Three fourth quarter picks doomed Smith and the Jets, especially with two of them coming in scoring position. But with Sanchez out until Week 11, Smith has a semblance of job security.
28.Terrelle Pryor OAK at Den
Note: Pryor needs the rushing yards to be productive - he's simply not going to throw that often (24 attempts Sunday) or well (5.25 yards per attempt).
29.EJ Manuel BUF at NYJ
Note: Two turnovers, but then led the team on a game-winning, 80-yard drive. Things are looking up in Buffalo.
30.Christian Ponder MIN vs. Cle
31.*Brian Hoyer CLE at Min
Note: Named the starter this week against the Vikes.
32.*Chad Henne JAC at Sea
Note: Gabbert likely unavailable again this week.
33.*Brandon Weeden CLE at Min
Note: Sprained thumb - Weeden's availability is in doubt. Out for this week, Brian Hoyer will start. *** Won't need surgery, but he's not guaranteed to get the job back when he's healthy. ***
34.*Blaine Gabbert JAC at Sea
Note: Could have his stitches removed this week, but he's not expected to be available Sunday.

Running Backs

1.Adrian Peterson MIN vs. Cle
2.LeSean McCoy PHI vs. KC
3.Doug Martin TB at NE
4.Marshawn Lynch SEA vs. Jax
5.Alfred Morris WAS vs. Det
6.Matt Forte CHI at Pit
7.Jamaal Charles KC at Phi
8.Arian Foster HOU at Bal
9.DeMarco Murray DAL vs. StL
10.*C.J. Spiller BUF at NYJ
Note: Lost a 12-yard catch from last week that actually went to Fred Jackson.
11.Frank Gore SF vs. Ind
12.*Joique Bell DET at Was
Note: Bush hasn't practiced yet - even if he plays, Bell's profile should be raised this week, and he's got a great matchup this week. *** Bush isn't expected to play - Bell has been bumped up accordingly. ***
13.Chris Johnson TEN vs. SD
14.*Bernard Pierce BAL vs. Hou
Note: Could get a lot more work this week, even if Ray Rice plays.
15.Lamar Miller MIA vs. Atl
16.Darren McFadden OAK at Den
17.Knowshon Moreno DEN vs. Oak
18.DeAngelo Williams CAR vs. NYG
19.Ryan Mathews SD at Ten
20.Darren Sproles NO vs. Ari
Note: *** A couple of extra touches likely with Ingram out. ***
21.Stevan Ridley NE vs. TB
22.*James Starks GB at Cin
Note: Went nuts against the Redskins' awful run defense after Eddie Lacy got hurt.
23.BenJarvus Green-Ellis CIN vs. GB
Note: Even though Bernard got both scores, Green-Ellis is the one who had 22 carries to just 8 for Bernard.
24.Ben Tate HOU at Bal
25.*Daryl Richardson STL at Dal
Note: Sat out practice Wednesday to rest his foot - this could become a common occurrence. *** Listed as probable. ***
26.*Trent Richardson IND at SF
Note: Will play 'as much as he can handle' in the wake of his trade to the Colts. Should be some semblance of a time-share this week. *** The coaches plan to give Richardson 10-15 touches today. ***
27.*Felix Jones PIT vs. Chi
Note: Got more action than Isaac Redman last week. Named the Steelers' #1 back until Bell returns.
28.*Giovani Bernard CIN vs. GB
Note: Limited by a sore hamstring in practice Thursday. *** Full practice Friday. ***
29.*Bilal Powell NYJ vs. Buf
Note: Returned to practice Thursday after sitting out Wednesday with an illness.
30.*Jacquizz Rodgers ATL at Mia
Note: Boosted profile with Steven Jackson out.
31.*David Wilson NYG at Car
Note: Only saw 24 snaps last week.
32.*Ahmad Bradshaw IND at SF
Note: Had 15 carries last week - assume that he's as close to full throttle that he's going to be early this season. Diminished profile in the wake of the Richardson trade.
33.*Jordan Todman JAC at Sea
Note: Todman was the primary backup to MJD last week. MJD's status is 'up-in-the-air' and Todman would be the starter if he can't go. Unfortunately, that would come on the road against the Seahawks.
34.*Jason Snelling ATL at Mia
Note: Got the red zone carry last week, but it's interesting to note that until very late, the Falcons nearly abandoned the run after Steven Jackson got hurt. With Jackson out 2-to-4 weeks, Snelling has a decent opportunity to share the duties with Jacquizz Rodgers.
35.Pierre Thomas NO vs. Ari
Note: *** A couple of extra touches likely with Ingram out. ***
36.Chris Ivory NYJ vs. Buf
37.*Rashard Mendenhall ARZ at NO
Note: (Toe) Has not practiced this week. *** Limited practice on Friday, expected to play, but I wouldn't expect a full workload. ***
38.Fred Jackson BUF at NYJ
Note: Had 12 carries, including a goal line carry, to 16 for Spiller.
39.Andre Ellington ARZ at NO
Note: Surpassed Stepfan Taylor in the pecking order last week. It's probably just me, but I tend to conflate J.J. Arrington and Andre Ellington in my mind.
40.*Willis McGahee CLE at Min
Note: Signed by the Browns, and he'll step right into being the primary ballcarrier.
41.Bryce Brown PHI vs. KC
42.*Maurice Jones-Drew JAC at Sea
Note: Suffered an ankle tendon strain injury against the Raiders. Tentatively expected to play this week, albeit at Seattle. MJD has expressed guarded optimism, but coach Bradley said his status is 'up-in-the-air.' *** Limited practice Friday. He's listed as questionable and will be a game-time decision for a late game. ***
43.Montee Ball DEN vs. Oak
Note: Ball's fumble and Moreno's big day could lead to Ball getting buried in the short-term.
44.Da'Rel Scott NYG at Car
45.Robert Turbin SEA vs. Jax
46.*Isaac Redman PIT vs. Chi
Note: Suffered a head injury on the opening kickoff. He was cleared from a concussion, but Felix Jones saw a lot more of the work.
47.Danny Woodhead SD at Ten
48.Michael Bush CHI at Pit
49.Roy Helu WAS vs. Det
50.Daniel Thomas MIA vs. Atl
51.Rashad Jennings OAK at Den
52.Brandon Jacobs NYG at Car
Note: Seven carries for four yards - yep, appears to be in midseason form.
53.Johnathan Franklin GB at Cin
Note: No carries the first two weeks, even after Eddie Lacy got hurt last week. Good practice reports this week, will get a chance for some carries against the Bengals.
54.LeGarrette Blount NE vs. TB
55.Kendall Hunter SF vs. Ind
56.*Bobby Rainey CLE at Min
Note: Even with McGahee signed, both Rainey and Ogbonnaya could see work this week in the wake of the Richardson trade.
57.*Chris Ogbonnaya CLE at Min
Note: Even with McGahee signed, both Rainey and Ogbonnaya could see work this week in the wake of the Richardson trade.
58.Jackie Battle TEN vs. SD
59.Lance Dunbar DAL vs. StL
60.Leon Washington NE vs. TB
61.*Donald Brown IND at SF
Note: Had seven carries for 30 yards as Bradshaw's lone backup. Buried after the Richardson trade.
62.Mikel Leshoure DET at Was
Note: Healthy scratch the last two weeks, but Bush's injury might change his status.
63.Ronnie Hillman DEN vs. Oak
Note: Just one carry against the Giants - the depth chart is a lie.
64.Knile Davis KC at Phi
65.Isaiah Pead STL at Dal
Note: Just one carry last week.
66.Alfonso Smith ARZ at NO
67.Jonathan Dwyer PIT vs. Chi
Note: Got just one carry on Monday night.
68.*Justin Forsett JAC at Sea
Note: Jordan Todman and not Forsett got the carries once MJD left last week.
69.*Le'Veon Bell PIT vs. Chi
Note: Will take part in individual activities this week, but isn't expected to play in the next couple of weeks. *** Increased practice activity this week - still not expected to play, but he's getting closer. ***
70.*Brandon Bolden NE vs. TB
Note: (Knee) Limited in Wednesday's practice.
71.*Mark Ingram NO vs. Ari
Note: Good news - Saints are aggressive in going for it on 4th down! Bad news - they keep running Ingram into the line on said 4th down plays! Sore toe, did not practice Thursday. *** Did not practice all week, unlikely to play. ***
72.*Ray Rice BAL vs. Hou
Note: Suffered a hip flexor injury that didn't need an MRI - coach John Harbaugh said that it didn't appear to be serious. Let's see what happens in practice this week. Has not practiced yet this week, though coach Harbaugh has said that Rice doesn't necessarily need to practice this week to play. *** Listed as doubtful, not expected to play. ***
73.*Reggie Bush DET at Was
Note: The Lions believe that Bush's knee injury is not serious. That's encouraging, but let's see if he practices - teams have a tendency to say that they believe it's not serious. Reports that he's feeling better, but hasn't yet been cleared by team doctors. *** Listed as questionable, but not expected to play. ***
74.*Shonn Greene TEN vs. SD
Note: Out multiple weeks after having arthroscopic knee surgery.
75.*Eddie Lacy GB at Cin
Note: Suffered a concussion on his first carry last week. With the Packers on bye in Week 4, there's a good bet that he won't play this week. Took a step forward in the league's concussion protocol, but hasn't yet been cleared for activity. Must practice Friday in order for him to play this week. *** Did not practice Friday. Mike McCarthy backed off his 'must practice' stance, but Lacy is still unlikely to go. ***
76.*Steven Jackson ATL at Mia
Note: Could be out 2-to-4 weeks with his thigh injury.

Wide Receivers

1.Calvin Johnson DET at Was
2.A.J. Green CIN vs. GB
Note: Just six catches for 41 yards - he's always had problems with Ike Taylor - I should have accounted for that better.
3.Demaryius Thomas DEN vs. Oak
4.DeSean Jackson PHI vs. KC
5.*Julio Jones ATL at Mia
Note: (Knee) Limited in practice Thursday. *** Listed as questionable but expected to play. ***
6.*Dez Bryant DAL vs. StL
Note: No problems with the foot - beat Brandon Flowers regularly. Dealt with a tight back after the game, though. (Back) Did not practice Wednesday, limited to rehab work Thursday. *** Listed as probable, will not need a pain-killing injection before the game. ***
7.*Brandon Marshall CHI at Pit
Note: Left practice Thursday with a tight back.
8.Pierre Garcon WAS vs. Det
9.Randall Cobb GB at Cin
10.Victor Cruz NYG at Car
11.Jordy Nelson GB at Cin
12.Dwayne Bowe KC at Phi
13.*Wes Welker DEN vs. Oak
Note: *** (Ankle) Listed as probable. ***
14.*Andre Johnson HOU at Bal
Note: Going through the NFL's concussion protocol. Hasn't yet received clearance from an independent, NFL-appointed doctor, but the Texans are proceeding as if he'll start. Once he gets cleared, we'll move him up. *** Passed through the concussion protocol with flying colors, will start this week.***
15.Vincent Jackson TB at NE
16.*Reggie Wayne IND at SF
Note: Has a shoulder injury, but was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
17.*Hakeem Nicks NYG at Car
Note: Dislocated his finger in the first quarter last week but returned, and x-rays revealed no fractures afterward. Not on the initial injury report Wednesday.
18.*Marques Colston NO vs. Ari
Note: (Foot) Full participant again in practice this week.
19.Steve Smith CAR vs. NYG
20.Torrey Smith BAL vs. Hou

29.Mike Williams TB at NE
30.Antonio Brown PIT vs. Chi
31.Tavon Austin STL at Dal

39.Kenbrell Thompkins NE vs. TB
40.Greg Jennings MIN vs. Cle
41.Nate Burleson DET at Was
42.*Aaron Dobson NE vs. TB
Note: Good news - played and scored. Bad news - a lot of high profile drops. He'd better get in gear before Gronk and Amendola return.

Note: Followed up his Week 1 breakout performance with a touchdown on six targets.
44.Rueben Randle NYG at Car
45.*T.Y. Hilton IND at SF

46.Cecil Shorts JAC at Sea
47.Denarius Moore OAK at Den
Note: Rumor has it that his favorite breakfast is a bagel.
48.*Roddy White ATL at Mia
Note: Did not practice Wednesday, limited Thursday. I'm trying to trade him in one 16-team league where we start 3 WRs. Best offer I've gotten so far is Eddie Royal. *** Limited on Friday. ***

50.Michael Floyd ARZ at NO
51.Sidney Rice SEA vs. Jax
52.Kenny Stills NO vs. Ari
53.*Leonard Hankerson WAS vs. Det

56.Jared Cook STL at Dal
57.*Rashard Mendenhall ARZ at NO
Note: (Toe) Has not practiced this week. *** Limited practice on Friday, expected to play, but I wouldn't expect a full workload. ***
58.*James Starks GB at Cin
Note: Went nuts against the Redskins' awful run defense after Eddie Lacy got hurt.
59.Ben Tate HOU at Bal
60.*Joique Bell DET at Was
Note: Bush hasn't practiced yet - even if he plays, Bell's profile should be raised this week, and he's got a great matchup this week. *** Bush isn't expected to play - Bell has been bumped up accordingly. ***
61.*Giovani Bernard CIN vs. GB
Note: Limited by a sore hamstring in practice Thursday. *** Full practice Friday. ***
62.*Daryl Richardson STL at Dal
Note: Sat out practice Wednesday to rest his foot - this could become a common occurrence. *** Listed as probable. ***
63.*Ahmad Bradshaw IND at SF
Note: Had 15 carries last week - assume that he's as close to full throttle that he's going to be early this season. Diminished profile in the wake of the Richardson trade.
64.Cecil Shorts JAC at Sea
65.Antonio Brown PIT vs. Chi
66.*Eddie Royal SD at Ten
Note: *** (Wrist) Listed as probable. ***
67.*Steve Johnson BUF at NYJ
Note: Suffered a minor hand injury in the win. Not on the Bills' initial injury report.
68.Tavon Austin STL at Dal
69.Lance Moore NO vs. Ari
Note: I wouldn't panic here - in fact, I'd buy low.
70.Antonio Gates SD at Ten
71.Owen Daniels HOU at Bal
72.Brandon Pettigrew DET at Was
73.Kyle Rudolph MIN vs. Cle
74.Charles Clay MIA vs. Atl
Note: Even got a goal line carry for a touchdown.
75.*Vernon Davis SF vs. Ind
Note: Injured his hamstring against the Seahawks, and the 49ers haven't given information on his status yet. Has not practiced yet this week. *** Game-time decision for a late game - not a good set-up.***
76.BenJarvus Green-Ellis CIN vs. GB
Note: Even though Bernard got both scores, Green-Ellis is the one who had 22 carries to just 8 for Bernard.
77.Denarius Moore OAK at Den
Note: Rumor has it that his favorite breakfast is a bagel.
78.*Felix Jones PIT vs. Chi
Note: Got more action than Isaac Redman last week. Named the Steelers' #1 back until Bell returns.
79.*Bilal Powell NYJ vs. Buf
Note: Returned to practice Thursday after sitting out Wednesday with an illness.
80.*Bernard Pierce BAL vs. Hou
Note: Could get a lot more work this week, even if Ray Rice plays.
81.*Jacquizz Rodgers ATL at Mia
Note: Boosted profile with Steven Jackson out.
82.*Ray Rice BAL vs.
83.*Reggie Bush DET at Was
Note: The Lions believe that Bush's knee injury is not serious. That's encouraging, but let's see if he practices - teams have a tendency to say that they believe it's not serious. Reports that he's feeling better, but hasn't yet been cleared by team doctors. *** Listed as questionable, but not expected to play. ***
84.*Maurice Jones-Drew JAC at Sea
Note: Suffered an ankle tendon strain injury against the Raiders. Tentatively expected to play this week, albeit at Seattle. MJD has expressed guarded optimism, but coach Bradley said his status is 'up-in-the-air.' *** Limited practice Friday. He's listed as questionable and will be a game-time decision for a late game. ***
85.*Jason Snelling ATL at Mia
Note: Got the red zone carry last week, but it's interesting to note that until very late, the Falcons nearly abandoned the run after Steven Jackson got hurt. With Jackson out 2-to-4 weeks, Snelling has a decent opportunity to share the duties with Jacquizz Rodgers.
86.Chris Ivory NYJ vs. Buf
87.Brian Hartline MIA vs. Atl
88.Josh Gordon CLE at Min
Note: Back from his suspension this week, but who will be throwing to him?
89.*Larry Fitzgerald ARZ at NO
Note: Aggravated his hamstring injury, but vowed to play this week. Did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. *** Just one limited practice this week, but active this week. ***
90.*Andre Johnson HOU at Bal
Note: Going through the NFL's concussion protocol. Hasn't yet received clearance from an independent, NFL-appointed doctor, but the Texans are proceeding as if he'll start. Once he gets cleared, we'll move him up. *** Passed through the concussion protocol with flying colors, will start this week.***
91.*DeAndre Hopkins HOU at Bal

94.Kenbrell Thompkins NE vs. TB
95.Rueben Randle NYG at Car

97.*Roddy White ATL at Mia
Note: Did not practice Wednesday, limited Thursday. I'm trying to trade him in one 16-team league where we start 3 WRs. Best offer I've gotten so far is Eddie Royal. *** Limited on Friday. ***
98.Nate Burleson DET at Was
99.*Aaron Dobson NE vs. TB
Note: Good news - played and scored. Bad news - a lot of high profile drops. He'd better get in gear before Gronk and Amendola return.
100.Mohamed Sanu CIN vs. GB
101.Fred Jackson BUF at NYJ
Note: Had 12 carries, including a goal line carry, to 16 for Spiller.
102.*David Wilson NYG at Car
Note: Only saw 24 snaps last week.
103.Bryce Brown PHI vs. KC
104.*Mark Ingram NO vs. Ari
Note: Good news - Saints are aggressive in going for it on 4th down! Bad news - they keep running Ingram into the line on said 4th down plays! Sore toe, did not practice Thursday. *** Did not practice all week, unlikely to play. ***
105.Pierre Thomas NO vs. Ari
Note: *** A couple of extra touches likely with Ingram out. ***
106.Montee Ball DEN vs. Oak
Note: Ball's fumble and Moreno's big day could lead to Ball getting buried in the short-term.

Note: Had seven carries for 30 yards as Bradshaw's lone backup. Buried after the Richardson trade.
108.Da'Rel Scott NYG at Car

Note: (Groin) Isn't likely to attempt kicking again until Friday. *** Out again this week. ***

4.*San Francisco 49ers vs. Ind
Note: Eric Reid suffered a concussion in the loss to Seattle.
5.*Denver Broncos vs. Oak
Note: As Gob Bluth frequently said, 'I've made a huge mistake.' Denver obviously is not the #30 defense. This is their proper ranking.
