2025 Fantasy Outlook
In games where Joe Mixon was active in 2024, the Texans rarely gave snaps or touches to Pierce. And when Mixon was out with an ankle injury, Pierce was out with his own hamstring injury. Pierce thrived with his one extensive opportunity, however, taking 19 carries for 176 yards and one touchdown against the Titans in Week 18 when the Texans were resting some of their starters. He nonetheless finds himself in a precarious situation for 2025, heading into the final year of his rookie contract with tough competition for backup roles behind Mixon. The Texans drafted Woody Marks in the fourth round -- a potential challenger for passing-down work -- and then signed 29-year-old Nick Chubb in early June. Mixon's offseason foot injury might seem to open up an opportunity, but Chubb looks like the favorite to start Week 1 after Pierce missed most of training camp with an injury of his own. Early work in preseason finale
Pierce had seven carries for 17 yards in Saturday's 26-7 preseason win over the Lions.
ANALYSIS
While Pierce getting work in the final preseason game might suggest the veteran is on the wrong side of a roster bubble, it's understandable given the quadriceps injury that impacted his first two weeks of camp. This was his lone preseason appearance, as Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans may have wanted to see him in game action, given the nebulous state of No. 1 back Joe Mixon, who is on the active/non-football injury list with an ankle injury and not a lock to be ready for Week 1. Mixon's health leaves Pierce and Nick Chubb as co-leaders in the backfield. Chubb made one preseason appearance last week against the Panthers, when Pierce was held out as a precaution.

2022
The 2023 season was a real bummer for Pierce, especially after he looked so great as a rookie fourth-round pick in 2022. Unfortunately for Pierce, his 2023 struggles were so profoundly bad that it's difficult to remember the 2022 version that ran for 939 yards in 13 games prior to a season-ending foot injury. Averaging 2.9 yards per carry will eventually get a running back sent to the bench, and possibly for good, so Pierce really needs a strong showing this summer if he's even going to earn the backup role to potential three-down workhorse Joe Mixon. A lack of sturdy competition in Houston's backfield -- rookie sixth-round pick Jawhar Jordan and passing-down back Dare Ogunbowale are the other main names -- doesn't mean Pierce will be safe in his backup role if he looks as bad as he did last year.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Mixon injury opens door
Pierce could have a path to significant playing time early in the regular season, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Joe Mixon is expected to face an extended absence and will be re-evaluated closer to the beginning of the regular season due to a foot injury.
ANALYSIS
Pierce's realistic scenarios run the gamut from starting Week 1 to failing to make the team entirely. If Mixon isn't ready for the start of the regular season and Pierce finds the form that helped him rush for 176 yards in the 2024 regular-season finale while Mixon rested, Pierce could begin the season as Houston's lead back. On the other hand, Pierce's minimal contributions as a pass catcher could lead to him missing the cut entirely since the Texans also have veteran Nick Chubb, rookie fourth-round pick Woody Marks and pass-catching specialist Dare Ogunbowale competing for roster spots at running back. The sooner Pierce is able to come off the active/PUP list due to an undisclosed injury and participate in training camp, the better chance he has of actualizing a more optimistic possibility.
