Australian Open Tennis Picks: Upset Alert
Reilly Opelka (+179) vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Opelka has an upset-friendly skill set, as the 6-foot-11 American is nearly unbreakable when his serve is rolling, so even his matches against top opponents often come down to just a few key points. He has been ranked as high as No. 17 and pulled off four top-20 wins in 2025. Davidovich Fokina is known for an uneven temperament, which will make it difficult for the No. 14 seed to maintain his concentration in this best-of-five set match, where one slip-up on serve is likely to cost a set against the big-serving Opelka. The Spaniard hasn't performed particularly well in Grand Slams, with just an 8-5 career record at the Australian Open and a 31-22 mark in majors overall.
Caty McNally (+224) vs. Victoria Mboko
McNally has taken her game to the next level since the middle of last year, finishing the season on a 20-8 run to put herself back firmly into the top 100. Mboko's coming off a breakout 2025 season, including a Canadian Open title that thrilled her compatriots in the crowd, but the talented teenager experienced a four-match losing streak after that breakout performance, suggesting that Mboko still has some unevenness to smooth out in her game. McNally can swing freely as the underdog while Mboko's in unfamiliar territory, as this is the latter's first Australian Open appearance and only her second time dealing with the expectations of being seeded at a major tournament.
Honorable Mention
Priscilla Hon (+443) vs. Iva Jovic
Australian Open Tennis Odds: Lock It In
Frances Tiafoe (-260) vs. Francisco Comesana
Tiafoe has posted his best results on hard courts, with four of his five runs to the quarterfinals or better at a Grand Slam having come on this surface. The 29th-seeded American was sharp in his straight-set first-round win over Australian qualifier Jason Kubler, and Tiafoe has a comfortable second-round draw against the 68th-ranked Comesana, who is into the second round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career at age 25. Comesana has an underwhelming 11-15 career record in hard-court matches on the ATP Tour.
Cameron Norrie (-265) vs. Emilio Nava
Norrie no longer consistently plays at the top-10 level he displayed a few years ago, but the British lefty saves his best tennis for the biggest events. He has failed to reach the third round only three times in his last 15 Grand Slam appearances. The No. 26 seed is favored to hit that benchmark again here, as the 24-year-old Nava has never been past the second round of a Grand Slam. The 89th-ranked American lost in qualifying in each of his previous three trips down under.
Honorable Mention
Jasmine Paolini (-385) vs. Magdalena Frech
Australian Open Tennis Predictions: Value Bets
Magda Linette (+115) vs. Ann Li
Linette took out No. 15 seed Emma Navarro in the first round, adding to the 33-year-old Pole's recent history of success at this venue, as she reached the semifinals in 2023. As the bigger hitter, the 50th-ranked Linette should control play against the 38th-ranked Li, whose ranking is propped up by strong results in smaller tournaments. Li has advanced past the second round of a Grand Slam only three times in her career, with two of those runs coming at the 25-year-old American's home slam, the U.S. Open.
Peyton Stearns (-138) vs. Petra Marcinko
Stearns seems to have been on the borderline of taking the next step for a while now, but perhaps 2026 will be the year that the 24-year-old American breaks out. She's off to a good start, as the 68th-ranked Stearns used her big forehand to control play en route to a convincing 6-3, 6-2 first-round win over No. 27 seed Sofia Kenin. Stearns' second-round opponent Marcinko will be playing just her second career Grand Slam main draw match, and Stearns' power offers a far different challenge compared to the 81st-ranked Marcinko's crafty first-round opponent Tatjana Maria.
Honorable Mention
Corentin Moutet (-142) vs. Michael Zheng
