Closer Watch
Pirates -- Mark Melancon cleaned things up with a perfect ninth Monday, marking his 14th save. Melancon has now gone eight consecutive outings without allowing a run; his strikeouts are still down (just 13 in 24 innings), but he's fanned a batter in his last two appearances after going four straight without a whiff. His rate stats have been normalizing – now a 2.63 ERA and 1.13 WHIP – and he's still only blown one save despite his early struggles.
Marlins -- Not that he was part of the closing mix anymore, but Steve Cishek was demoted to Double-A on Monday night. A.J. Ramos is set to move forward as the Marlins' closer, with Carter Capps seemingly the second choice. Meanwhile, Cishek will get a chance to work out his issues in the minor leagues; one imagines that if he can regain his dominant form down in Jacksonville, he's got a chance to come back as a high-leverage reliever in the second half.

Recommended Pickup
Joey Gallo, 3B, TEX – With Adrian Beltre (thumb) injured, the best home-run hitter in the minors – we're talking 80-grade power here – is heading up straight from Double-A to get his first taste of Texas. Gallo's been doing fairly typical work by his standards so far, with nine homers to go with a .314/.425/.636 line, but also a painful 33.6 percent strikeout rate. Still, that whiff rate is an improvement over last year's, and Gallo has all the makings of a high-BABIP hitter if he can avoid being stifled by the increasingly popular infield shift. He'll get a two-to-three-week run at third base for the Rangers, and if Gallo's hitting ability resembles what he showed in the minors, he's going to make things awfully interesting once Beltre gets healthy. Remember, Gallo's slammed 80 homers over the last two seasons, while Beltre's been seeing his own power decline.
