Target Breakdown: Week 9 WR/TE Usage Recap & Week 10 Waivers Preview

This article is part of our Target Breakdown series.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out sister article Backfield Breakdown before placing waiver claims on running backs or choosing starters for Week 10.

Now it's time to look at wide receivers and tight ends, though it'll be a bit briefer than usual as yours truly makes his way back from New Orleans after watching the Ravens walk all over the Saints. I'll update the article with more commentary Tuesday night / Wednesday morning, but for now I just want to make sure all the tables and stats are up before waivers run Tuesday night for some of the less-enlightened fantasy leagues.

Share Comparisons

Below we show target, route and air-yard shares for Week 9, compared to numbers for the season as a whole. Sorting by the delta columns is a quick way to find outliers (or trends... or injuries).

Note: The numbers below aren't adjusted for games that players have missed. I didn't have time this week, but we'll do it that way again next week. The good news, for now, is that RotoWire's advanced receiving stats page shows team shares for targets and air yards that are adjusted to only include the games in which a player was active.

    • He took one carry for 16 yards, after getting nine carries over the previous two weeks.

    • McLaurin is averaging 5.3 catches for 80.3 yards and 0.33 TDs on 8.3 targets in Heinicke's three starts.

    • Watson left the game later after taking a hard hit, though he reportedly avoided a second concussion in as many weeks.
  • Watkins tied for second on the team in targets and was easily second in routes run
    • He's dust, of course, as the Ravens discovered last year. The Packers might be better off giving Toure a shot.
  • Tonyan dropped to 41% route share, down from 59% the week before and 55% for the season. That's something to watch moving forward, especially after Deguara caught five of five targets for 41 yards.

  • Woods was injured in the second half, potentially turning the three-way timeshare into a two-way split.
  • Things have only gotten worse for the pass catchers under Sam Ehlinger, but maybe a radical shakeup of the coaching staff will help? (or not)

  • RB Rhamondre Stevenson led the team with seven targets and had the lone receiving TD.
  • Bourne played more snaps than Thornton with DeVante Parker (knee) sidelined, a reversal from the past couple weeks.
    • Both saw four targets, and they combined for 16 yards.

  • The Bengals took a 35-0 lead into the half, but the Panthers did score three TDs on four drives after halftime, with Baker Mayfield taking over for P.J. Walker.
  • Marshall scored a 23-yard TD in the fourth quarter to finish with 3-53-1 on six targets, following 4-87-0 on nine targets the week before.
    • The 2021 second-rounder is averaging 3.0 catches for 57.0 yards on 6.0 targets through three weeks as a starter, with 20.7% target share.
    • Marshall hasn't done much on short throws (6-of-12 for 66 yards, per PFF), but he's caught seven of his 11 targets 10-plus yards downfield.
  • Moore dropped to 2-24-0 after 6-152-1 and 7-69-1 the previous two weeks.
    • He's averaging 3.9 catches for 49.9 yards, easily his lowest marks since his rookie year.
  • Tremble continues to get more playing time than Thomas and scored his second TD in three weeks, but the 2021 third-rounder still has just one game with more than four targets and none with more than six.
    • And Thomas still takes away enough routes/snaps to keep Tremble out of the TE2 picture for the most part.

  • The Bengals had five WRs and three TEs above 30 percent snap share, with none getting more than two-thirds of the snaps in this blowout win.
    • When the game was still competitive, it was Boyd, Higgins, Hurst and Irwin getting most of the routes.
      • Irwin seems to have slipped ahead of Thomas as the No. 4 receiver, after splitting work with him the week before. TBD if either has a real role after the Week 10 bye, as there's perhaps a chance for Ja'Marr Chase (hip) to return, though it's more likely he misses additional time.

  • Palmer put up 8-106-0 on 10 targets, after 9-57-0 on 12 targets in his previous game (Week 6 vs. DEN).
    • Palmer is averaging 5.2 catches for 56.8 yards on 7.7 targets in the six games he's played with Keenan Allen (hamstring) inactive. (Mike Williams was also inactive for this one, and likely will miss at least one or two more games.)
  • Everett had exactly five catches for a third straight game, and has seven or more targets in three straight (but not TDs). He finished with only 36 yards.
  • Carter put up 5-53-0 on six targets, while Bandy had 5-26-0 on eight looks. Carter got just two more snaps, one more route and two fewer targets, but remained more productive (relatively speaking).

    • Pitts also saw seven targets, and also finished with less than 30 yards despite some big opportunities (197 air yards). Marcus Mariota hasn't been accurate downfield when throwing to his young tight end.
  • Byrd was targeted just once after scoring long TDs both of the previous two weeks. He was still the No. 3 receiver in terms of snaps/routes.

  • Moore put up 8-69-0, after 1-31-0 and then 7-92-1 in the first two games with Hopkins back.
    • Moore is averaging 6.7 targets per game (and 9.2 YPT) since Hopkins returned, though it's mostly still short stuff (sub-5.0 aDOT) and carries have been sparse (five for one yard in six games).
    • If we include games Hopkins missed, Moore is averaging 5.3 catches for 53.3 yards on 7.2 targets. WIth Hopkins playing, improved efficiency has made up for a tiny loss of volume (Marquise Brown's injury obviously also being quite relevant here).
  • Anderson took over a full-time role but was targeted only three times on 34 routes and finished with negative yards.

  • Kupp bounced back from his ankle injury the week before and washis usual brilliant self with 8-127-1 on nine targets.
    • His teammates.... were less brilliant. Jefferson was catchless on five targets, including a brutal drop late in the game.
      • Jefferson and Skowronek split work; it was even in terms of routes but with Skowronek getting nearly all the snaps on run plays.
      • The 130 air yards might be taken as promising, if not for the ugly state of the Rams offense and how bad Jefferson has looked so far.
  • Hopkins stole some snaps/routes from Higbee, who also lost some routes to pass-blocking. The double-whammy left Higbee at only 58% route share, and with a season-low one target.
    • Higbee's volume from the first half of the season may be a thing of the past. I have no hesitance dropping him in shallow leagues.

  • Otton again handled a near-every-own role with Cameron Bate (neck) inactive, and the rookie ultimately was the hero with a 28-yard catch and then a one-yard TD on the winning drive.
  • Evans and Godwin both finished with less than 50 yards on double-digit targets.
  • Godwin's aDOT this year is now all the way down to 5.5.
    • It was 7.3 last year; 10.2 the first year with Tom Brady.
      • And yet... his catch rate is only 65%, following back-to-back years at 77%. I've been reluctant to admit it, but Godwin is more WR3 than WR2 this year.

    • Willis completed five of 16 passes for 80 yards.
  • Okonkwo, a fourth-round rookie, had a 48-yard gain but was still only the No. 3 TE in terms of snaps.

    • MVS somehow saw one fewer target on 46 more routes.
  • Smith-Schuster saw a season-high 12 targets and finished with 10-88-0 after 5-113-1 and then 7-124-1 the previous two games.

    • Likely also led the team in targets but caught only one... fortunately it was a 24-yard TD.
      • He had a fourth-quarter drop that was then nearly intercepted.
  • One target for Duvernay with both Andrews and Rashod Bateman out? Come on, Greg Roman.
  • Jackson was targeted twice on five routes and caught ap ass for 16 yards in his Ravens debut. His role might frow some, but I doubt it'll be full-time at any point.
