Race Preview

NASCAR Xfinity series racing returns this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The venue has traditionally been the season finale, but this year will serve as a midseason stop along the path to crowning the 2020 champion. The series has raced at the track since 1995 and has undergone a number of changes since then. Currently, the track sports a 1.5-mile configuration with progressive banking in the turns that has improved racing from its original Indianapolis Motor Speedway-type layout. Drivers and teams this week will have to deal with new elements due to the schedule change as well as the lack of track time without practice or qualifying. AJ Allmendinger captured the win last week at Atlanta Motor Speedway, while Chase Briscoe tops the playoff standings.

Key Stats at Homestead

  • Number of races: 25
  • Winners from pole: 4
  • Winners from top-5 starters: 14
  • Winners from top-10 starters: 18
  • Winners from 21st or lower starters: 4
  • Fastest race: 140.515 mph

Previous 10 Homestead Winners

2019 - Tyler Reddick
2018 - Tyler Reddick
2017 - Cole Custer
2016 - Daniel Suarez
2015 - Kyle Larson
2014 - Matt Kenseth
2013 - Brad Keselowski
2012 - Regan Smith
2011 - Brad Keselowski
2010 - Kyle Busch

Homestead has produce 18 different winners in 25 races. Tyler Reddick has won the last two, but he won't be in the field this week. Joe Nemechek leads the series with three wins. Much like the Cup series, the track has made a habit of spreading wins across the field, with no driver running away with a dominant run at the track. This year's visit to the south Florida circuit will be vastly different than in the past. For one, a championship isn't yet on the line. Second, the season finale is in the fall, while this week's race will take place in the heat of early summer. Drivers and teams will be challenged to find the setups that work under these conditions, and it wouldn't be surprising if yet another new Homestead winner is crowned again this week.

MY PICKS THIS WEEK

Lower-Risk Lineup ($50K Salary Cap)

Austin Cindric - $10,500
Harrison Burton - $9,400
Anthony Alfredo - $7,900
Brett Moffitt - $7,700
Riley Herbst - $7,500
Justin Haley - $6,700

Austin Cindric is still searching for his first win of the season. He took a step backward in the last two races but has two top-10s in his two Homestead starts. He will start ninth on Saturday. Harrison Burton started ninth and finished 10th at Homestead last season and remains the only driver to finish in the top 10 in every race so far this year. Anthony Alfredo has only contested three series races so far this season but finished in the top 15 every time out. The 21st starting position should give him a great springboard to give fantasy owners finish differential points. Backing him up are Brett Moffitt and Riley Herbst. Moffitt has been a consistent top-15 finisher and added a sixth-place Charlotte finish to his tally this season, while Herbst brings three 2020 top-10s with his latest being at Phoenix. Justin Haley showed Homestead speed last season when he started eighth. He ultimately fell afoul of the damaged vehicle policy and finished 33rd that day, though. He finished third in Atlanta and has three top-10s in the last five races, however. Atlanta's performance should be a good measuring stick for what fantasy owners should expect from him this week.

Higher-Risk Lineup ($50K Salary Cap)

Chase Briscoe - $11,300
Ross Chastain - $9,800
Myatt Snider - $8,400
Ryan Sieg - $7,200
Jeffrey Earnhardt - $6,900
Matt Mills - $6,400

Chase Briscoe remains on top of the championship standings with two wins, and finished ninth in Atlanta for his fourth top-10 finish in the last five races. He starts eighth this weekend and finished third here last season. Ross Chastain does not have a series top-10 at this track but has picked up four top-10 finishes from the last five Xfinity races this season. His best Homestead finish was 14th in 2014. Myatt Snider will make his series debut at Homestead in this race and is on a quest to work his way into a playoff position. He has two top-10 finishes in the last three races but didn't fare as well in Atlanta with a 29th-place result. A driver in playoff contention and looking to keep things that way is Ryan Sieg. He has two top-fives and four top-10s so far this season but is looking to reverse his current slide of three consecutive finishes outside of the top 15. Jeffrey Earnhardt hasn't scored a top-10 finish this season but is a constant threat for top-15s. Fantasy owners will need a minimum of that from him this week with him starting in the 15th position. Deep in the selections could mean Matt Mills comes into play. He starts 35th in Saturday's race, which means he could add some valuable finish differential points with a finish inside just the top 30.
