VCU
vs. South Florida
Offensively, VCU does a couple of things incredibly well that should cause significant issues for South Florida. First, the Rams should get plenty of second-chance opportunities, as they have the 89th-highest offensive rebounding percentage in the nation, and they're going against a Bulls defense that ranks 274th in rebounding. Second, the Rams are excellent at drawing contact, ranking 39th in free-throw attempt rate, while the Bulls have trouble getting stops without fouling, ranking 345th in free-throw attempt rate allowed.
At the other end of the court, South Florida has been highly effective at interior scoring, ranking 18th in the nation with a 62 percent two-point shooting percentage. The only problem is that VCU is just as great at preventing easy points, holding opponents to under 43 percent on shot attempts inside the arc, the 20th-best mark among all D-1 teams. This is a key concern for the Bulls on Wednesday, as they are making just 32 percent of their shots beyond the arc, which ranks 209th.
Considering VCU's strengths and South Florida's weaknesses, especially on defense, I like the Rams' chances of pulling away on Wednesday. I'm laying the points with VCU.
College Basketball Best Bet: VCU -2.5

Colorado State
vs. Virginia Tech
The most significant difference between these two teams is the fact that one plays defense, while the other does not.
Virginia Tech isn't great defensively by high-major conference standards. Still, it ranks 88th in adjusted efficiency and 51st in effective field goal percentage allowed, so it at least seems to give an honest effort at that end of the court. Colorado State, on the other hand, ranks 213th in adjusted defensive efficiency and is at the bottom of the nation in turnover percentage (349th), block percentage (332nd), and steal percentage (362nd). It's also seemingly not great at challenging shots, with an effective field goal percentage allowed that ranks 249th.
The silver lining for the Rams is that they have had a potent offensive attack thus far, ranking 21st in adjusted efficiency. They are proving to be a dangerous team from long range, having made 45 percent of three-point attempts, although they also tend to rely on the free throws. Colorado State has scored almost 28 percent of its points from the charity stripe, ranking 14th in the nation. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, although in this matchup, the Rams are less likely to see their usual amount of trips to the foul line. Virginia Tech is among the best at getting stops without fouling, ranking 27th in free-throw attempts allowed.
Not to be outdone offensively, the Hokies are also proving to be decent at scoring. They rank 51st in adjusted efficiency and are exceptional at protecting the ball, recording the fifth-best turnover percentage among all D-1 teams. They are also active on the glass, posting the 94th-highest offensive rebounding percentage.
Given all the glaring defensive issues with Colorado State, I have to roll with the Hokies in this one.
College Basketball Best Bet: Virginia Tech -4.5

Wichita State
at Saint Mary's
The Gaels have consistently had an elite defense under head coach Randy Bennett, and this year is no exception. Counting the current season, Saint Mary's has had a top-25 efficiency rating in six consecutive seasons, with its current ranking (22nd) being the lowest since 2019-20. On top of their defensive prowess, the Gaels also have a penchant for slowing the game down as much as possible, ranking below 330th in adjusted tempo in 11 consecutive seasons, including the current one. Given these two facts, the under is often an intriguing option in any game featuring Saint Mary's.
Wichita State, meanwhile, is 4-1 but has struggled to impress. It scored just 75 points against both UNC Asheville and Milwaukee, two teams that are ranked below 280th in adjusted defensive efficiency. The Shockers' best offensive skill is collecting offensive boards, but the Gaels are likely to offset this advantage with their own skillset, as Saint Mary's ranks 39th in defensive rebounding percentage and 17th in two-point field goal percentage allowed, holding opponents to under 43 percent on shot attempts inside the arc. For additional context of how this matchup might play out, it's worth noting that Saint Mary's ranks 35th in KenPom's average height metric, while Wichita State ranks 320th.
I'm tempted to lay the points with Saint Mary's, but a large spread with a team that shortens the game isn't my favorite idea. Instead, I prefer our odds of seeing the Gaels play lockdown defense while killing the clock. I'm taking the under in this one.
