Once again, we gather here today in an attempt to navigate through exams and winter breaks across the college hoops landscape. Today's slate is like many in December: small and odd. However, every day is an opportunity for winners and I see a few candidates out there. Let's see what we have on this bitter cold Sunday.

Monmouth Hawks at Fairfield Stags 
One of the things I like to look for in mid/low-major teams is how competitive a team is in its losses, and while a 4-5 record doesn't jump off the page, Monmouth has been competitive in each of its five defeats. Today, the Hawks travel to KenPom No. 303 Fairfield to take on a Stags squad that has struggled against anyone in the top-300. The Stags are 5-1 against teams outside the top-300 and 0-4 against teams inside, with an average loss of almost 18 points. Monmouth should be able to comfortably cover this small number.

South Alabama Jaguars vs North Texas Mean Green 
In my opinion, this is the second best game on today's slate. USA and UNT represent two excellent mid-major programs with a history of success, and I like the home team today. USA's two losses came on the road against the two best teams on their schedule, most recently a 26-point whooping at the hands of No. 115 ETSU. UNT has had similar home/road results with wins over inferior opponents and an 0-3 record against top-200 teams. The Jaguars get another home victory today.

Saint Mary's Gaels vs Boise State Broncos 
What's the best game on today's schedule, you ask? Let's take a trip to beautiful Idaho Falls, where Saint Mary's takes on the Broncos in this neutral-ish site affair. These teams are like the Spider Man meme pointing at each other: both are top-50 teams and both sport top-25 defenses. In Saint Mary's only loss to Vandy, the Commodores forced the action with their superior speed and athleticism, which lead to a 25-point loss. Boise does not have that ability, and nobody embraces the grind like the Gaels. Boise will have to beat Saint Mary's at its own game, and I don't see that happening.
