Tournament Preview

After just a brief break in the PGA Tour schedule, the new 2015-16 PGA Tour wraparound season is upon us. Silverado Resort & Spa will play host to the Frys.com Open for the second straight season. The par-72 North Course is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that has seen various tournament play since the 1960s and received an overhaul in 2010 after Johnny Miller and two others bought the resort in hopes of returning it to the PGA Tour schedule. Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose headline the event to form the best field in the history of this event, though it will be without defending champ Sang-Moon Bae, who is fulfilling his two-year military obligation following a heartfelt President's Cup effort last week. Thirty-four graduates from the Web.com Tour litter the field hoping to springboard their PGA Tour season and potentially getting into the 2016 Hyundai TOC in January with a victory.

Key Stats to winning at Silverado

Recent Form
Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green

Past Champions at the Frys.com Open

2014 - Sang-Moon Bae (Silverado CC)
2013 - Jimmy Walker
2012 - Jonas Blixt
2011 - Bryce Molder
2010 - Rocco Mediate
2009 - Troy Matteson
2008 - Cameron Beckman
2007 - Mike Weir

Champion's Profile

Gleaning from just one relevant event at this venue is challenging, but it's pretty clear Sang-Moon Bae dominated tee-to-green in his windswept Sunday victory last year. The relatively short course should cede plenty of low rounds for those giving themselves good putting opportunities. There's a handful of superstars in the field who should play well, but outside of the chalk look for recent Web.com graduates riding a hot hand from the Web.com Finals to play well on a course that will yield many birdies.

MY PICKS THIS WEEK

Lower-Risk Cash Game Lineup ($50K Salary Cap)

Hideki Matsuyama - $10,800
Brooks Koepka - $10,600
Steven Bowditch - $8,200
Ryo Ishikawa - $7,500
Whee Kim - $6,500
Jon Curran - $6,300

Focusing mostly on last year's results at the same venue, the safe lineup incorporates four players from 2014's top-10: Hideki Matsuyama, Brooks Koepka, Steven Bowditch, and Jon Curran. Matsuyama is entering off a solid showing at the President's Cup while American Brooks Koepka returns from a few weeks off to build on his great play last summer. Ishikawa backfills the lineup based on a pair of top-25s at this event the past two years, while Whee Kim is my go-out-on-a-limb pick based on his solid tee-to-green stats and upside to surprise with a top-15 as he did thrice last season.

Higher-Risk Tournament Lineup
($50K Salary Cap)

Rory McIlroy - $12,800
Justin Rose - $12,000
Justin Thomas - $9,300
Bronson Burgoon - $5,400
Harold Varner III - $5,400
Wes Roach - $5,100

With a bevy of rookies mixing in with a top-heavy field this week, the tournament sets up well for a studs & duds lineup. McIlroy is the clear-cut favorite who is a must have along with Justin Rose, who is coming off a runner-up at the Tour Championship and fits the ball-striking profile like a glove. Justin Thomas rounds out the studs coming off a great rookie campaign last year with elite GIR and par-5 scoring ranks. The duds of the lineup are anything but, as first-timers Burgoon, Varner III, and Roach all finished inside the top 33 in the Web.com Tour Finals Priority Ranking. Burgoon and Varner III have great recent play, while Roach represents the greatest risk despite finishing eighth on last year's Web.com Tour money list.
