The Preview

It would make sense for the PGA Tour's wraparound fall series to lose out on the casual sports fan's attention while NFL Sundays ramp up, but Cameron Champ's teary-eyed win at the Safeway Open landed among the headlines while the young medalist couldn't have made his ailing grandfather any more proud. Champ held off a competitive crew of contenders as well, with household names like Marc Leishman and Justin Thomas trailing not-so-far behind. Another unexpectedly stout field will now gather in Las Vegas for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open this week, as a relatively easy venue in TPC Summerlin allowed 2018 champion Bryson DeChambeau to reach 21-under on the way to his victory here last year. Expect beautiful conditions in the southwesterner desert throughout the week as a virtually zero-percent chance of rain accompanies sunny skies and high temps reaching the upper 80s.

Recent Champions

2018 - Bryson DeChambeau

2015 - Smylie Kaufman

Yahoo Value Picks - based on $200 salary cap

Cream of the Crop

Brooks Koepka - $50

The World No. 1 has been hit-or-miss at TPC Summerlin with a pair of missed cuts to accompany top-4 finishes in 2014 and 2016, but Koepka is well-rested since placing fourth at the TOUR Championship where he gained nearly five strokes on his approaches. Koepka ranked third in holes per eagle, eighth in birdie average, 11th in GIR percentage and first in par-4 scoring on the way to a third-place finish in the FedEx Cup standings last season. His $50 price tag isn't too detrimental this week, either, given Koepka is certainly the best player among the bunch of those listed at $44 and higher.

Adam Scott - $40

The UNLV product returns to Vegas, but it'll be Scott's first time in attendance at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open as he now heads to TPC Summerlin as the 17th-ranked player in the OWGR. Scott struggled to keep the ball on the planet from off the tee last week in Napa as he hit just 42.86 percent of the fairways in regulation, but he salvaged a T17 finish by ranking sixth in SG: Approach and SG: Around-the-Green. He's gained no less than 2.6 strokes on his approach shots in any event dating to the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Glue Guys

Collin Morikawa - $34

Morikawa finished top-3 among the field in both SG: Approach and scrambling en route to another top-10 performance this past week at the Safeway Open, where he gained a total of 5.5 strokes on his approach shots and surged to a bogey-free, eight-under 64 in Round 2. Morikawa's ball-striking upside is no secret at this point, he just needs to become more consistent when the putter is in his hands.

Scottie Scheffler - $34

The University of Texas product is priced a little bit higher than you would like to see for a PGA Tour rookie making his Shriners debut, but Scheffler has earned this valuation by opening the season with results of T16-T7 at the Sanderson Farms Championship and The Greenbrier. He gained a total of 14.8 strokes from tee to green over the course of these two events, but Scheffler also got hot with the flat stick at the Country Club of Jackson. Through a limited sample size of four measured rounds, he actually leads the entire Tour in SG: Tee-to-Green as he sits second in birdie average as well.

Bargain Bin

Dylan Frittelli - $24

The South African will be a newbie at TPC Summerlin, but Frittelli's impressive recent form includes back-to-back top-10s at the Safeway Open and Sanderson Farms Championship to begin the season. Not only has Frittelli averaged 8.25 strokes gained from tee to green during this brief stretch, but he also picked up 3.9 strokes on the field with the flat stick last week at Silverado North.

Cameron Champ - $21

There's a decent chance that Champ could be mentally drained after such an emotional win last week at the Safeway Open, but it's too difficult to simply gloss over the 24-year-old's extremely discounted price on Yahoo. He's gained a total of 18.4 strokes from tee to green through his first two starts of the 2018-19 campaign, and also finished top-30 here at TPC Summerlin in 2018.
