Race Preview

The next round of championship eliminations commences this week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series. Only four races remain this season, and the next three races will determine which four drivers will race for the 2021 title at Phoenix later this fall. The championship field was reduced to eight last week at Bristol with an unexpected win from Chandler Smith that moved him from below the cut line and into the final eight. Todd Gilliland and Austin Hill did not make the cut. This round begins with a return to Las Vegas where John Hunter Nemechek led 94 laps to win one of his five victories so far this season. Another win this week would earn him a spot among the final four championship contenders.

Key Stats at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

  • Number of races: 28
  • Winners from pole: 9
  • Winners from top-5 starters: 18
  • Winners from top-10 starters: 22
  • Winners from 21st or lower starters: 1
  • Fastest race: 143.163 mph

Previous 10 Las Vegas Winners

2021 spring - John Hunter Nemechek
2020 fall - Austin Hill
2020 spring - Kyle Busch
2019 fall - Austin Hill
2019 spring - Kyle Busch
2018 fall - Grant Enfinger
2018 spring - Kyle Busch
2017 - Ben Rhodes
2016 - Tyler Reddick
2015 - John Wes Townley

Toyota's reign at Las Vegas continued with Nemechek's win at the track earlier this season. The manufacturer has now won seven of the last eight races at the track. The 1.5-mile oval also favors drivers starting closer to the front, and the top three starting spots this week will be filled with Toyota drivers. The last eight Las Vegas winners all started 11th or better, too. The spring race featured nine cautions, but Nemechek dominated the lead throughout the race. Track position and restarts could be key to winning and getting that ticket to the championship four. With the fastest drivers starting up front, it may be hard for trucks not quick out of the gate to hang on. Cautions will shape strategy, but being able to make moves on restarts is likely to be a driver's best chance to gain positions. Nemechek and Chandler Smith will start on the front row.

In the spring, Nemechek started third and led 94 of 134 laps at Las Vegas to hold off teammate Kyle Busch for the win. That was Nemechek's first win at the track and second top five. He has since gone on to be one of the favorites this season. Hill finished third that day. That was his fourth consecutive finish of third or first at the track, too. He started 31st in the spring, but will be poised to attack this week as he lines up 10th. Dylan Lupton could be a good choice for rosters this week with his 37th-place starting position. He has two Las Vegas starts with an average finish of 12th. He will be one to watch early as he comes through the field. Carson Hocevar finished 24th in the spring, which was his first series Las Vegas start. He will be aiming for a good start to this round of championship elimination races and has finished 11th or better in the last four races leading up to this week. Since her 28th-place Las Vegas finish earlier this season Deegan has continued to improve. She had two rough races at Darlington and Bristol, but grabbed her first top-10 just three races ago. Las Vegas should be a venue at which she can demonstrate how far she has come this season. She will start this race 17th. Lining up 14th this week is Ryan Truex. He has three prior Las Vegas starts and was eliminated from the spring race with a damaged vehicle. His other two races there both ended with 12th-place finishes.
