Hurston Waldrep O/U 4.5 K's vs. Seattle Mariners
I wasn't writing College Baseball for RotoWire at the time, but back when Hurston Waldrep was dialed in at the University of Florida (Southern Miss before that), I was locked in betting every one of his starts. I'll maintain there's nothing better than college baseball because it allows me to get a preview of tomorrow's talent years before the mainstream. Over the years, I've built a strong stable of what I like to call my "incubator" guys, players I've been on since pre-day 1. Waldrep is on that list. Or as I like to call him, "Thurston" Hurston Waldrep.
Always felt him falling to the late 20's in the '23 draft to Atlanta was a steal, and it turns out it is. Waldrep has undergone an extensive mechanical change in his delivery, but it's paid off 100 fold. As Atlanta is in the process of unlocking his full potential, the young star is 4-0 with a 1.01 ERA and 33 K/11 BB in 35.2 IP. Can't say I'm surprised to be honest. This was the guy I thought could at least be the "2" in ATL's rotation long term. His X-Factor in college and now in the pros is his devasting split-change (I'm sick of people calling it a splitter. Splitter and split-change are two different pitchers. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk). Because of that pitch, he's been an ATM on the strikeout props since being recalled to the Bigs.
On Saturday afternoon, Thurston will see the often-strikeout prone Mariners lineup. Fresh off a 9 K effort against Philly, Waldrep is set up nicely to rack up them punchies. The M's currently have the third most K's in the league (1,256), along with the sixth-highest K rate (23.3%). If this sounds familiar to you, that's because it is. I highlighted the same numbers when Nolan McLean cashed that over in his debut a few weeks ago.
I'm almost always backing my seeds in a butter matchup. That means one thing for us. LADDER DAY. Wal-Drip has racked up seven K's in three of his last four, so you better believe we're going back to the well on this Saturday contest.
