Closer Watch

Mets - Even though Bobby Parnell landed on the disabled list Tuesday due to a herniated disc in his neck, the Mets' bullpen has fared well in high-leverage situations thanks to 40-year-old LaTroy Hawkins. In the last six games, including Sunday, Hawkins has worked the ninth four times, notching three saves in the process, though one of those outings acted as Matt Harvey's first career shutout. Hawkins himself has been scored upon just once in the second half, a span in which he's surrendered one run on eight hits and no walks, while whiffing five batters in 12 innings. His recent strikeout rate is nothing to write home about, but he should supply cheap saves until either he falters on a number of occasions or Parnell's fate is determined.

Yankees - Suddenly, MLB's all-time leader in saves is vulnerable, as Mariano Rivera blew his third consecutive save Sunday, the first such streak among his 1,098 career appearances. The most recent blowup included yet another long ball off the bat of reigning Triple Crown winner, Miguel Cabrera, who tagged him Friday for a two-run shot, and was subsequently followed up by a Victor Martinez drive that squeaked over the right field wall. Overall, Rivera has given up five runs on seven hits (three home runs) with a 2:1 K:BB ratio in four innings during the infamous stretch, but a walkoff homer by teammate Brett Gardner supplied the Yankees' legend with his third win of the season, as well as a bit of solace for fantasy owners. Despite the distress of late, Rivera is in no danger of handing over ninth-inning duties to, say, David Robertson, the team's closer-in-waiting.

Recommended Pickup

Dan Haren, P, WAS - Haren's arrival in Washington during the offseason was thought to be the piece that would ensure continued playoff appearances for years to come. However, he was blasted more times than not across the first three months of 2013, ultimately posting a 9.82 ERA in four June starts (18.1 innings). A bout with shoulder stiffness, which forced a midseason DL stint, has seemingly been a blessing in disguise in six starts since his activation on July 8. During that stretch, he's notched at least six strikeouts on each occasion, while totaling four quality starts, en route to a 3-2 record, 2.43 ERA, and 0.973 WHIP in 37 frames. With his upcoming nod Thursday versus the Giants quite the agreeable matchup -- in 16 career games, he's recorded a 3.14 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 7.09 K/9IP in 100.1 innings -- Haren seems poised to capture his fourth quality start in a row.
