Closer Watch – A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

St. Louis - Fernando Salas pitched a scoreless ninth inning Thursday to pick up his fifth save of the season. Salas has not officially been named the Cardinals' closer, but he has emerged as the top option after giving up just one earned run and recording five saves and two wins since April 28.

Texas - After converting his first eight opportunities of the season, Neftali Feliz blew the save for the second straight day Thursday. Feliz has posted a 1.26 ERA and struck out 12 batters over 14.1 innings this season, but he has also allowed 10 hits and issued eight walks in those outings. Feliz's success last year, and in his 12 appearances prior to Wednesday's, will keep in the closer's role for now, but he will have to do a better job limiting baserunners to solidify his hold on the job and keep his ERA down.

Toronto - Frank Francisco picked up his fifth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning Thursday. He has given up a run in three of his seven outings this month, but with three saves since last Friday it's clear he is the ninth-inning guy right now in the Blue Jays' bullpen.

Recommended Pickup

Madison Bumgarner, SP, SF - Though Bumgarner is hardly an unknown, it is a bit surprising how available he is at the moment. Bumgarner's 0-6 start likely scared some owners off, but keep in mind he entered last season as Baseball America's 14th rated prospect and posted a 3.00 ERA in 18 starts for the World Champions. Plus, though Bumgarner did not pick his first win until Thursday - by pitching 8.2 innings in a victory over the Dodgers - he has given up just six earned runs over his last five starts (1.60 ERA) and has a respectable 3.71 ERA on the season. Bumgarner is a free agent in roughly 50 percent of leagues on both ESPN and Yahoo!, so though he is taken in a lot of formats, it would certainly be worth your time to see if he is available.
