Closer Watch – A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Minnesota – Glen Perkins relieved Matt Capps in the ninth to get the final two outs and pick up the first save of his career Sunday. Capps gave up two hits, and being that he'd blown the save Saturday, manager Ron Gardenhire quickly pulled Capps from the game. He's blown six saves while converting 13. With such a mediocre success rate this season, there's a good chance Gardenhire could look to Perkins more often in save chances. If Joe Nathan can find the magic that he used to have, there's a chance he could be looked to as well.

Toronto – Octavio Dotel pitched 1.2 innings after coming in with the score tied in the eighth, and despite the team being in a save situation after the eighth, Dotel was left in to finish the game. The fact that Frank Francisco wasn't used is a reminder of the lack of a consistent closer in the Jays' pen. When another save opportunity arises, it could be Francisco, Dotel, or Jon Rauch getting the ball.

Recommended Pickup

Charlie Furbush, SP, DET – Furbush was given Phil Coke's spot in the Tigers' rotation with Coke moving back to his traditional bullpen role. The Tigers should keep Furbush in the rotation as long as he's able to give them good starts. He was called up earlier this season to be used out of the bullpen and performed well in that role, but he excelled as a starter in Triple-A. Through 46.1 innings at Toledo this season, Furbush posted a 2.91 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 55:14 K:BB ratio. He has the ability to strikeout more than a batter per inning, making him potentially valuable in leagues of all sizes. Furbush made his debut in the starting rotation against the Angels on Monday and gave up three runs on five hits over 4.2 innings while striking out five and walking one. It'll take a few starts for Furbush to get stretched out. The Tigers pulled after just 65 pitches Monday. Furbush is worth a speculative add for the next couple weeks for any team that needs more strikeouts.
