As the 2025 college football season passes its midway point, it's starting to come into focus which teams have luck on their side, with two teams (Miami and Texas A&M) pulling the proverbial rabbit out of their respective hats through Week 6.
That's because the Hurricanes and Aggies have racked up yearlong lucky ratings of 1.3 apiece, with Miami's latest magic trick being to jump out to a 21-3 lead through three quarters of play in Tallahassee before crashing to earth in the game's final stanza, with Florida State scoring 19 unanswered to put the fear of god into the visiting side before order was restored and the No. 3 team in the land escaped the panhandle with a hard fought 28-22 win to move to 5-0.
In College Station, the story was much the same for head coach Mike Elko and the Aggies, as A&M played with its food in Starkville against a stubborn Mississippi State team for the better part of three quarters before squashing the plucky home side, 31-9.
The 22-point road win over a 4-2 Bulldogs team moved A&M to 5-0 for the first time in nine years, handing Mississippi State a 14th straight SEC loss while scoring the nation's top lucky score in Week 6 (alongside Mario Cristobal's Hurricanes).
Outside of the Southeastern quadrant of the country, the top teams in the FBS, luck wise through six weeks of play are squads like Georgia Tech and Auburn, which have matching 1.1 lucky ratings this year, with the Yellow Jackets sitting at 5-0 for the first time since 2014, while the Tigers are 3-2 with consecutive defeats against Oklahoma (24-17) and Texas A&M (16-10).
Throw in the Illinois Fighting Illini (1.0 lucky score), and the three-headed monster that is Ole Miss, Iowa State and Virginia (0.8 lucky rating each) and you have the greater part of our luckiest teams in the FBS ranks through six weeks covered, with the Houston Cougars and BYU Cougars of the Big 12 rounding out the collective, with matching 0.7 ratings in the Space City and Provo, respectively.

Will luck even out for these teams and their college football odds backers?
The FBS teams that have received far more tricks than treats this season are the 1-4 Boston College Eagles (-1.6 lucky rating), followed by the Kansas State Wildcats and Clemson Tigers, who have matching -1.5 lucky ratings this season.
In the Eagles' case, four straight losses at the hands of Michigan State (42-40), Stanford (30-20), California (28-24) and Pittsburgh (48-7) have BC alone in the basement of the ACC league table, with a shot at redemption against a beleaguered Clemson team that's 2-3 this season on Saturday.
Over in the Little Apple, things have somehow been almost as painful, as a season full of hope has spiraled into nail-biting disarray, as Chris Klieman's team is 2-4 with the largest margin of defeat being six points, against Arizona in Tucson, to go with a three-point Dublin defeat against Iowa State and a similar score (24-21) at the hands of Army two games later, followed by a last-second, come-from-ahead loss to Baylor in Waco on Saturday, putting K-State at risk of missing a bowl game for the first time in a 12-game season since Bill Snyder's final year in 2018.
The other FBS teams to make the cut through Week 6, bad luck wise, were squads like Penn State (-1.2 lucky rating), Pittsburgh (-1.0 lucky rating), Arkansas and Florida (-0.8 lucky rating each), while Oklahoma State (-0.7 lucky rating), Wisconsin and Rutgers (-0.6 lucky rating each) round out the unlucky list this week.

Power 4 Conference Luck Index
Rank | Conference | Average Team Ranking |
1 | SEC | 24 |
2 | Big 12 | 25 |
T3 | ACC | 28 |
T3 | Big Ten | 28 |
At a conference level, the SEC still rules the roost when it comes to luck, with America's amateur football incubator posting an average team ranking of 24, one spot ahead of the Big 12 and four spots ahead of the other two conferences (the ACC and Big Ten).
While the Big Ten may be short on luck as a whole, that doesn't appear to be harming the conference's CFP title betting odds, with both of the top teams on FanDuel Sportsbook's CFP odds board (Ohio State at +430 and Oregon at +550) hail from the land of milk and honey, while the SEC has Alabama in the No. 3 spot at +650, followed by Miami out of the ACC at +900 and fellow SEC power Georgia, at +1000.
