Yahoo DFS Golf: Butterfield Bermuda Championship

This article is part of our Yahoo PGA DFS Picks series.

Butterfield Bermuda Championship

Southampton, Bermuda
Port Royal Golf Course - Par 71 - 6,828 yards
Field - 127 entrants
Purse - $6.5M

The Preview

Countless withdrawals from an already ghastly field have combined with a grim weather forecast to bring into question why this event is even being played, especially as it competes with a trio of World Series games and NFL Sunday. But, there are still DFS contests to be won as the Butterfield Bermuda Championship features names like Seamus Power and Guido Migliozzi in the $40 salary range on Yahoo this week. Wednesday's Pro-Am has already been canceled due to dangerous wind gusts, and delays throughout the weekend are likely as more inclement conditions arrive. On a more positive note for those brave entrants in attendance at Port Royal, the tournament's purse has been inflated by $2.5M compared to last year's edition.

Cream of the Crop

Matt Fitzpatrick - $48

Coming off a three-shot victory in his most recent start at the European Tour's Andalucia Masters, Fitzpatrick's $48 salary matches Patrick Reed's atop the board this week. The latter understandably performed poorly at the TOUR Championship in his return from an illness that landed him in the hospital, but Reed's first two appearances of the 2021-22 season earlier this month were even worse than his East Lake showing. Reed lost a whopping 15.3 strokes from tee to green across only six rounds during the Las Vegas Swing in October. It's hard to justify paying up for the slumping Reed over Fitz at such a high cost.

Mito Pereira - $43

I was between Pereira and Adam Hadwin ($39) in this spot, but the former's consistently great ball striking indicates much higher upside if the putter cooperates. Pereira has gained an average of 5.67 strokes per tournament on his approach shots alone throughout his first three starts of the season, resulting in a third-place finish at the Fortinet Championship followed by back-to-back top-40s in Mississippi and Vegas. In addition to his impressive iron play, Pereira has been excellent off the tee as he ranks No. 1 among this week's field in SG: OTT over his last 12 rounds.

Glue Guys

Hayden Buckley - $34

Buckley rebounded from a missed cut at the season opener with a T4 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, where he gained north of five strokes putting after struggling with the flat stick in Napa. He then picked up 6.7 strokes on the field from tee to green at the Shriners Children's Open, leading to another top-10 finish this fall. He's up to a career-best 160th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Danny Willett - $31

Willett won for the first time in two years earlier this month at the Euro Tour's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where he actually had to beat some okay competition, as Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood all placed T7 or better. Willett immediately traveled stateside and posted a T21 at the Shriners Children's Open, ranking second among the field in SG: Around-the-Green as he broke 70 in all four rounds. The Englishman made the cut in his Bermuda Championship debut last year.

Bargain Bin

Nick Hardy - $27

Hardy has gained at least 4.2 strokes from tee to green in each of his first two starts this season, notching results of T36-T26 at the Fortinet Championship and Sanderson Farms Championship. During the fall series, he's sixth in GIR percentage, 18th in SG: Approach, 35th in SG: Off-the-Tee and 16th in proximity.

Sahith Theegala - $22

The three-time All-American out of Pepperdine University should be one of the better rookies on Tour this season, and he showed that by tying for eighth at the Sanderson Farms Championship, where he gained 6.8 strokes from tee to green and an additional three strokes with the putter. Through 10 measured rounds, he's top-25 on Tour in SG: T2G, GIR percentage and scrambling.
