One week after we seemed to establish that Mason Mount and Hakim Ziyech would be splitting set pieces for Chelsea, Ziyech suffered a hamstring injury only 30 minutes into their match against Leeds United, leaving Mount with a monopoly for the rest of the game and allowing him to take all eight of their corners, though Reece James did take a free-kick cross. Ziyech could be sidelined through the busy holiday period, leaving plenty of opportunities for Mount on dead balls.
Mount's big share this past weekend left him with 18 of Chelsea's 27 free kicks over the past four gameweeks, a 66.67 percent share over that span, the fourth-highest in the Premier League that trailed only James Ward-Prowse (89.66 percent), James Maddison (86.67) and James Rodriguez (70.83). Of that group, only Ward-Prowse has a set-piece share greater than 55 percent for the season, which isn't surprising since he leads the Premier League in set-piece share at 83.58 percent, with West Brom's Matheus Pereira second at 66.20.
And speaking of West Brom, they're going to need someone to take over for Pereira after he was sent off with a straight red card in the 34th minute of last weekend's match against Crystal Palace. Pereira missed Gameweek 8 after testing positive for COVID-19, so he actually only took 45.71 percent of their free kicks over the past four gameweeks, and given what we saw since then, Conor Gallagher, Matthew Phillips and Filip Krovinovic figure to get more opportunities in the short term.
As it stands, seven players have taken at least half of their team's set pieces this season: Ward-Prowse, Pereira, Aaron Cresswell (58.33 percent), Bruno Fernandes (55.26), Rodriguez, Kevin De Bruyne (52.38) and Ashley Westwood (50.72), though Pereira and Westwood have taken fewer than 50 percent over the past four weeks.
