Closer Watch

Washington Nationals – Drew Storen has rated among the most effective relievers in the National League this season, but the opportunity to land Jonathan Papelbon from its division rival proved too inviting to pass up for Washington's front office. Thursday afternoon was the first opportunity for Papelbon in a Nationals uniform. A foreboding preview to what NL playoff teams might face in October, Storen pitched a perfect eighth inning and Papelbon locked down the ninth for his 18th save of the season. If things continue in that manner, Storen and Papelbon represent arguably baseball's most formidable 1-2 punch in the eighth and ninth innings.

Recommended Pickup

Brandon Phillips, 2B, CIN – Phillips reminded fantasy owners Thursday why he was among the five best second basemen in baseball for nearly a decade. For one glorious afternoon, the aging veteran was that player once again. He hit two home runs and stole two bases in the game against the Pirates, driving in seven runs. Nonetheless, now 34, his overall skill set has declined to the point he is rostered in only half of fantasy leagues. He may no longer be the kind of difference-maker he once was, but Phillips is capable of putting up better than replacement-level numbers the rest of the way. Dustin Pedroia owners who have been shuffling guys in and out of their lineups at second could consider Phillips a viable short-term replacement.
