FanDuel Fantasy Football: Week 5 Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel Fantasy Football series.

Quarterback

Jay Cutler, MIA ($6,700) – If there were ever a week to use Smokin' Jay, it's this one. The Tennessee Titans are tied with the Patriots in allowing 11 passing touchdowns this season and a 6.0 YPA against, which is ninth worst in the league. Cutler has plenty of weapons at his disposal in DeVante Parker, Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills and Julius Thomas, and pairing Cutler with two of those players would make for a nice GPP stack. Miami's defense is suspect, to put it nicely, so this could sneakily be a shootout and one of the higher scoring games of the day.

Running Back

Melvin Gordon, SDC ($7,100) – Gordon makes for a nice play this week given most owners will suffer from a case of recency bias and remember his 3.4-point performance last week. This should be an easy week for him to rebound in New York as the Giants have given up 4.6 yards per carry this season, the eighth most in the league. Look for Gordon to get back on track in New York this week, keeping in mind he scored 13.9, 17.3 and 16.4 fantasy points in his first three games of the season.

Isaiah Crowell, CLE ($6,100) – In no way, shape or form should anyone use Crowell in cash games, but he makes for an interesting play in GPPs this week. Game flow has favored Duke Johnson over the Browns' first four contests and this is expected to be a close game. That translates into Crowell getting second-half carries — especially if Cleveland is winning late in the game. This is a great matchup against the Jets, who have been great against the pass but have given up the third most fantasy points to opposing running backs. Crowell has gotten double-digit carries in three of his first four games and surprisingly has averaged two targets in the passing game, as well.

Wide Receiver

Larry Fitzgerald, ARI ($6,700) – Fitz has been getting a ton of targets this season (over 10 per game) and has a decent floor after scoring double-digit points in three of four games. One of those was a 27.4-point effort, showing his upside. The Eagles have given up the third most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers (42.2 per game), making this a plus matchup for Fitzgerald. With the lack of a solid running game, the Cardinals have been airing it out with Carson Palmer attempting 183 passes, which is the most in the NFL heading into Week 5.

Randall Cobb, GB ($6,600) – It's up in the air whether or not the Packers will have the services of Davante Adams, who has practiced on a limited basis, but Cobb would probably get a few extra targets in his absence. Quietly, Cobb has posted double-digit fantasy points in each of the three games he's played in this season and the Cowboys have been the eighth worst team as far as giving up fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. Keep an eye on Adams' status over the next few days.

Tight End

Austin Seferian-Jenkins, NYJ ($5,500) – ASJ hasn't had a breakout game yet after being suspended the first two games of the season, but it could be coming this week. The Browns have given up the second most fantasy points to opposing tight ends on the season (Giants are first) and Seferian-Jenkins has a respectable 10 targets over his first two games. There's a good chance he'll find the end zone this weekend and had his first double-digit game.

Kicker

Adam Vinatieri, IND ($4,500) – He's priced at the minimum and will play at home inside of a dome, making weather a non-factor. The 49ers defense has improved, but on the road, even against a backup, the Colts should be able to move the football.

Defense

Detroit Lions, ($4,700) – Would it be surprising that the Lions defense averages the most fantasy points at this point of the season with 14.5? Not only that, but they've shown consistency with at least 12 fantasy points in every game thus far. Cam Newton has the distraction from a press conference in the back of his head, and with both Kelvin Benjamin banged up and no Greg Olsen, his receiving corps is no where near 100 percent.
