Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Andrew Triggs, Oak at KC ($35): Triggs did not allow an earned run in his 2017 debut against the Angels, but left the game with a 1:3 K:BB over 5.2 innings. Despite the lackluster performance, he has a shot to be a nice play as he notched a 51 percent groundball rate last season, and the Royals ended 2016 having hit the fourth highest groundball percentage in the league.

Jaime Garcia, ATL at MIA ($28): Garcia has always been a groundball machine, and the Marlins held the highest groundball rate (49 percent) in the league last season. His numbers don't look very good after blowing up in his season debut against the Mets, but it's worth noting that the 30-year-old threw four scoreless innings before coming apart in the fifth.

Catcher

Brian McCann, HOU at SEA ($14): Yovani Gallardo was once viewed as a high-caliber pitcher in the National League, but issues with walks and homers led to a 5.42 ERA last season. McCann notched a 44 percent flyball rate and a .181 ISO against righties in 2016, while Gallardo kept the ball on the ground at a 43 percent clip.

First Base

Joey Votto, CIN at PIT ($22): History tells us that Ivan Nova likes to use his curveball early and often (28 percent last year). This should be music to the ears of a player like Votto, who registered a 10.2 RAA against the pitch last year. Votto also notched a .429 wOBA against righties in 2016.

Second Base

Joe Panik, SF vs. ARI ($14): Shelby Miller got clobbered by lefties in his first season with the Diamondbacks in 2016, logging a .541 slugging percentage and a .400 wOBA against over 55 innings. Panik went through a bit of a rough stretch but still managed a .166 ISO against righties, and has begun the new campaign with eight hits (three doubles) against his opposite hand over 17 at-bats.

Third Base

Kris Bryant, CHC vs. LAD ($22): There are a lot of things to like about Brandon McCarthy, but a predisposition towards injuries and homers has made him a volatile option in recent years. Bryant won't do him any favors in regard to the latter, as he notched a hard contact rate of 40 percent against righties last season, and tallied a 4.6 RAA against the curveball, a pitch McCarthy threw 29 percent of the time.

Shortstop

Troy Tulowitzki, TOR vs. MIL ($14): Chase Anderson couldn't keep the ball in the yard against righties last year, allowing 17 homers in 81.2 innings. Tulowitzki held a reverse platoon split as far as power was concerned, as he logged a .196 ISO and 35 percent hard contact rate against same-handed pitchers over 383 at-bats.

Outfield

Adam Duvall, CIN at PIT ($18): Like Votto, Duvall will benefit from the pitch selection of Nova (7.3 RAA vs. the curveball last year), but has an added advantage based on batted ball splits. Nova has been an extreme groundball pitcher for most of his career, while Duvall notched a 47 percent fly ball rate in 2016.

Mike Trout, LAA vs. TEX ($25): A.J. Griffin simply can't help but give up homers. The 29-year-old allowed two homers in his loss to the A's last week, meaning at least two balls have left the yard in seven of his last nine starts dating back to last season. It goes without saying that Trout is an excellent candidate to feed off Griffin, as he tallied a .238 ISO and a 40 percent hard contact rate against righties.

George Springer, HOU at SEA ($21): Springer has opened 2017 on an absolute tear, homering in five of nine games. That trend has a chance to continue against Gallardo, as he struck out just 14 percent of the right-handed batters he faced last year, contributing to an xFIP of 4.96 over 67.2 innings.
