The quarterfinals of the Australian Open begin Monday from the hard courts of Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia, with the action starting Sunday night in the United States. Three young Americans will be in action, but all of them face difficult matchups, while Carlos Alcaraz continues his quest to become the youngest man ever to complete the career Grand Slam.

All men's singles matches at Grand Slams such as the Australian Open are best of five sets, while women's singles matches are best of three sets. A mix of players' previous hard court results, recent form and stylistic matchups can help pinpoint intriguing betting opportunities, both among favorites likely to cruise to victory and underdogs ready to pull off upsets. The aforementioned underdogs are highlighted in the Upset Alert section, while the Lock It In section covers players who can safely be viewed as favorites.

Australian Open Tennis Picks: Upset Alert

Elina Svitolina (+160) vs. Coco Gauff

Svitolina hasn't dropped a set in this tournament and is coming off an excellent performance in her 6-2, 6-4 fourth-round win over No. 8 seed Mirra Andreeva. The No. 12 seed can follow a similar blueprint in her matchup with Gauff. Like Andreeva, Gauff is a superb athlete but can break down on the forehand wing and has a vulnerable second serve, so the rock-solid Svitolina will try to attack those weaknesses. Gauff leads their head-to-head 2-1 but each player has won four sets across those three matches. The third-seeded American has been pushed to three sets in each of her last two matches, but she served noticeably better in the Round of 16 against Karolina Muchova, as Gauff's two aces and three double faults were both her best marks of the tournament. Svitolina won Auckland leading up to this tournament, so she has started the season 9-0 and is riding high in her attempt to reach a fourth career Grand Slam semifinal.

Australian Open Tennis Odds: Lock It In

Carlos Alcaraz (-541) vs. Alex de Minaur

Alcaraz has a 5-0 head-to-head record against de Minaur, dropping only two sets across those five matches. The Australian's lack of weapons are exposed in this matchup, as the athletic Alcaraz can match de Minaur's exceptional retrieving skills while possessing the ability to effortlessly inject pace and change angles with creative shots most players don't even think to attempt. This is the seventh time de Minaur has reached a quarterfinal at a Grand Slam, and he has yet to advance past this stage. Alcaraz would likely have to beat himself for de Minaur to have a chance in this match, and the Spaniard looks too locked in to oblige, as Alcaraz is focused on completing the career Grand Slam at just 22 years of age.

Alexander Zverev (-223) vs. Learner Tien

Zverev's serve should prove to be the difference in this match. The 6-foot-6 German generates plenty of free points with his serve but is also an elite mover in rallies, while the 5-foot-11 Tien needs to work a lot harder to hold. Tien beat Zverev on the hard courts of Acapulco last year, but Zverev answered under brighter lights with a straight-set clay-court win at the French Open. That loss to Tien was Zverev's only loss to a lefty in the No. 3 seed's last 37 such matches. Now that Zverev has had a chance to familiarize himself with the intricacies of Tien's patterns, Zverev is in good position to step up in a familiar stage for the German, who is attempting to reach his third consecutive Australian Open semifinal. Nerves could come into play for Tien in the 20-year-old American's first quarterfinal at any Grand Slam or Masters 1000 event.

Honorable Mention

Aryna Sabalenka (-640) vs. Iva Jovic
